Contact details (email & phone number) of 50M Instagram users have been discovered on an unguarded database located in Mumbai, India.

TechCrunch, which broke the story, said it included personal information such as email and phone numbers of high profile users known as "influencers".

The database has been traced to a Mumbai-based company called Chtrbox.

Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, told the BBC it was trying to find out where the data had come from.

Chtrbox, which is a marketing company, has taken the database offline.

In a statement, the firm said reports were "inaccurate".

"A particular database for limited influencers was inadvertently exposed for approximately 72 hours.

"This database did not include any sensitive personal data and only contained information available from the public domain, or self-reported by influencers."

Nevertheless, gathering - or scraping - information from Instagram accounts violates the policies of the social media site.

I'm actually not surprised by that. The background code is doing exactly what it is supposed to do. Off the top of my head it's not obvious to me how you would easily exclude this. I'd say you'd need to deliberately create a training set of essentially soft-core pedo porn videos like it is using and train an algorithm to recognize it and seek it out (essentially like what the base one is doing now) and then have it running and adding anything it finds to a master list of videos that do not trigger recommendations based on viewing and do not show up as recommended videos. I'm pretty sure something like that is the answer, but then you have to have youtube knowingly create an algorithm to simulate SC pedo porn feeds which I'm pretty sure is going to be a no-go without a federal directive or some shit as it introduces far more liability than them throwing their hands up and saying "the code is content agnostic it's not our problem".

I say introduces liability because you'd essentially be creating a pre-packaged black box that, if it ever got leaked, could be easily modified to trawl the internet and curate personal pedo catalogs for the user. I know that these things likely already exist, but pedos with backgrounds in CS creating pedo-finding shit and youtube creating pedo-finding shit deliberately are pretty different things.
