Russia's meddling was just icing on the cake, FB/IG/Twitter and all other social media running with unchecked algorithms that just foster increasingly more bizarre hate within echo chambers lead directly to Trump being a thing along with media loving to cover him because it meant they didn't have to really do any research and could just get "shock" clicks and retweets and other shit.
Look at Myanmar's violence that went from 0 to 100 within months of FB being introduced and not monitored:
