So I can't say what I was reading or why, but back in 2019 there was high-level talk at Facebook about buying a gaming studio to make stuff for the Metaverse and one topic of conversation was the advantages of buying Epic to own the Unreal Engine (buying Bethesda or CD Projekt Red was also brought up).
