Everyone loves to shit on the company that has given me the best job I've ever had, but those same piss-bottle jobs that you deride here include free college tuition, industry leading wages, 401(k) match, and some of the very best healthcare I've ever seen.

Although I'm sure the company you work for or own gives back a far larger amount of money to their community. I'm also sure you don't empower them or their competition; you don't buy from Amazon, Wal-Mart, Target, or any of those dirty fortune 500 companies that have ever had an employee complaint. I'm sure you go down to the local corner mart to get your groceries and only buy from the locally owned hardware store or boutique.

I stopped buying anything from Amazon over a year ago. I never buy anything from Wal-Mart.

Ethical consumerism is impossible under capitalism but I can set my biggest priorities and not using Amazon, Wal-Mart, Nestlé, or buying from Chinese companies is what I can manage.

Those kind of communities aren't new, and were quite prevelant in pre-WW1 era America. [S]Most[/s] Some have survived and created historic housing districts. I believe Ford created the first worker community near one of their plants.

But if Bezos has his hand in it then you'll probably see paper mache homes next to shipping facilities.

Also there was a railroad tycoon who made one, started off paying over average but quickly lowered pay to get people stuck paying rent to him and trying to make ends meet. People rose up to strike and they sent in the US army with machine guns and shot like 20 of them.

They also tend to monitor what small scale sellers are making big bucks off, then sweep in with an Amazon version to push them out of the market.

No corp is a saint but Amazon is fucking super far from being decent in any way, look at the shit coming out now about Blue Origin and how fucking horrible it is to work there according to some engineers. Reports of people saying they were surprised the rocket even worked to get Bezos into Not-Space

When i worked for Walmart, i too saw them in rose-colored glasses, because i had one of the good jobs that paid well. That doesn't mean the people below me were not suffering and they didn't do shady shit. Working for that kind of company, there is a point where the job goes from shit to amazing real fucking quick. If you are at the white-collar stage, you most likely have it pretty well off.

They monitor what everyone sells so they can find the margins, yep. Just like Google uses your data to make money, Amazon uses their data to make money.

I disagree, and can only speak from my personal experience, but I've learned more and grown more at Amazon in the last 6 years than in any previous experience in my life. I've hired former chauffeurs and security guards and given them entry level jobs in IT because they had good interviews and they make over 150k/year now. I work monthly with a software development engineer who started in a fullfillment center (as a temp, not even a full Amazon employee) and taught himself code and transferred through the company to his current position over the course of several years. That guy is making 250k+ a year right now with no degree.

I've never worked at Microsoft or Google or any of the other big IT companies, but I've worked for other large companies, and no other company I've ever been a part has more opportunities for their people to develop or grow into real jobs if they just try. Any Amazon employee, regardless of position can get a development box and start writing code and contributing to the internal code base on our internal github. Amazon spends over 1 billion a year in internal billing just for training HARDWARE. Those are servers not making money just available for people to learn on. Internal mentoring programs exist with over 60,000+ registered mentors to help with sales, security, software development, front end designer, hardware. Then internal program of FC2AWS (Fullfillment Center to AWS) that helps FC employees learn skills to transfer to the AWS side of the house.

I have a cousin who works for Amazon, doing something in IT/programming, and he makes in the $230-260k area. I still don't shop at Amazon.

I am waiting to see if any changes are made with Bezos stepping down, but I'm a very pro-union person and odds are my stance isn't going to change.

A degree may help for IT/Sys Admin/data infrastructure type job. But certs are way more powerful than a standard college degree in that field.
