of course the biggest problem there isn’t the identity issue, it’s even pretending insulin would ever be free

How did a Banana company overthrow Guatamala?
God damn what a miscalculation.
Idk where this comment came from, but I actually know of this one, for once. It wasn't the only fruit related US operation either, and go figure, also involved the same exact company, United Fruit. The big ones I know of being the popular Banana Wars and the other being the Guatemalan Coup.
The former spanning form post Spanish American War to pre WW2. Which resulted in decades long US military occupations across various countries. Where in places like Haiti hundreds of Marines landed to seize political and financial interests of the Haitian government for private capital or Honduras. Where the US military went in to suppress the local population in order to keep the banana wealth of United Fruit flowing. This helped spawn the famous phrase of "Banana Republic".
The later one in question here took place in the 1950s. One of the many fruit related US involvement taking place for around over 100 years this point.
So, United Fruit lobbied Eisenhower to overthrow the government of Guatemala to show that he was hard on "communists". This of course was a lie as there was no Soviet Involvement in the region. This was all in response to the Guatemalan government initiating land reforms which took land away from the United Fruit, and gave it to peasants to produce/live/better themselves and their country on. So the CIA went in and did what they do in the financial interests of the powerful. Murder people, and install puppet regimes that listen to US directives. This one in question ending democracy in the country, leading to ~40 years of civil war, banning of political parties, political imprisonment and torture, The Guatemalan Genocide, etc. All to protect the hegemonic interests of the US and its private capital, shocker.
Worth pointing out that this took place when Che Guevara was riding around Latin America on his bike in his early 20s. I have been meaning to work through reading his motorcycle diaries eventually, but alas. This event though, convinced Che that the US would always oppose progress towards the left, even incremental peaceful progress as in this case. His trip along with this US coup changed Che and explicitly caused him to become a dedicated revolutionary Marxist.
Thanks Valisk.
Literally on previous page, and why I made the post I made.
