Facebook to Combine Messenger, Instagram, & WhatsApp into a Single Platform, Projected to be Complete by 2020
The plan was first reported in the New York Times and is believed to be a personal project of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Once complete, the merger would mean that a Facebook user could communicate directly with someone who only has a WhatsApp account. This is currently impossible as the applications have no common core.

"We want to build the best messaging experiences we can; and people want messaging to be fast, simple, reliable and private," said Facebook in a statement.

"We're working on making more of our messaging products end-to-end encrypted and considering ways to make it easier to reach friends and family across networks," it added.

The NYT claimed that Mr Zuckerberg's championing of the plan to connect the messaging system had caused "internal strife". It was part of the reason that the founders of both Instagram and WhatsApp left last year.

Facebook & Google had been paying users as young as 13 $20/mo to test apps, but collected all of their private data in the process.

Facebook removed about 800 accounts from it's platforms (FB & Insta) primarily from Iran for misinformation.

n total, Facebook identified 262 pages, 356 accounts, and three groups that were involved in the coordinated inauthentic behavior by Iran. There were 162 Instagram accounts that were identified as well.

The Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFR) analyzed the accounts that Facebook had identified. According to DFR, much of the content posted across these groups and pages spread pro-Iranian messages and engaged in amplifying already polarizing topics, like the Israel-Palestine conflict.

According to Facebook, about 2 million accounts followed at least one of the Iranian Facebook pages and around 1,600 others had joined the groups. More than 254,000 accounts followed the Instagram profiles. Less than $30,000 were spent on ads on both of the platforms and were paid in US dollars, UK pounds, euros, and Canadian dollars. Facebook did not say how many people the advertisements reached.

Around 30 percent of these assets had been active for more than five years, in some cases suggesting that Iranian entities had been engaged in online influence campaigns since around 2010.

Twitter removed 764 accounts from Iran, Russia, & Venezuela for spreading misinformation.

In its report, Twitter said that it has recently removed 764 accounts originating in Venezuela that had engaged in “malicious automation.” Most of them were suspended prior to the 2018 U.S. midterms, but 176 of these accounts sent approximately 50,000 tweets regarding the U.S. midterms. Twitter said that the uncovered accounts are “another example of a foreign campaign of spammy content focused on political themes, and the behavior we uncovered is similar to that utilized by prior Russian IRA accounts.” According to NBC News, many of the accounts tweeted in favor of president Nicolás Maduro.

Twitter also said that it had removed 418 suspicious accounts with ties to Russia, the majority of which were suspended prior to the 2018 midterms. Those accounts sent more Tweets about U.S. politics compared to the other two batches of suspicious accounts, tweeting the #MAGA hashtag (which refers to President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign slogan) 38,000 times.

Twitter also said it found and removed 6,000 tweets that attempted to spread false information about how to vote in the midterms.

Facebook is collecting information on everyone, even those that don't use it's services.

"Millions of smartphone users confess their most intimate secrets to apps, including when they want to work on their belly fat or the price of the house they checked out last weekend. Other apps know users’ body weight, blood pressure, menstrual cycles or pregnancy status.”

The picture painted is one of a digital advertising ecosystem out of control. It goes on to point out that 11 popular health apps, serving tens of millions of users, are (or were) spewing data towards Facebook’s servers with little indication to the user of what is going on.

Worse still, this was happening, the WSJ reported, whether or not the person using the app was even a member of Facebook at all.

The company has a standard list of App Events that it provides to every developer that wants to use them. On top of that, developers can also create Custom Events, tailored to their app’s specific needs. In Facebook’s policies for how to use Custom Events, it states that developers shouldn’t use Custom Events to gather and send back sensitive data.

But, that’s what those 11 apps supposedly did, according to the Wall Street Journal's testing. One of them, Flo Period & Ovulation Tracker, was collecting and sending data about women’s ovulation cycles, periods and whether or not they were trying to become pregnant. Of course, women were willingly putting this information into the app - as that was its purpose - but most were surely unaware of how it was being passed on.

MySpace lost (dumped) all content older than 3 years in a recent server move.

"As a result of a server migration project, any photos, videos, and audio files you uploaded more than three years ago may no longer be available on or from MySpace," the firm said in a statement.

    "We apologize for the inconvenience."

It also included the email address of its data protection officer Dr Jana Jentzsch.

Andy Baio, who helped build the Kickstarter crowd-funding site, tweeted that the loss could amount to some 50 million tracks by 14 million artists over that period.

"Flagrant incompetence may be bad PR, but it still sounds better than 'we can't be bothered with the effort and cost of migrating and hosting 50 million old MP3s'." he wrote.

Facebook will ban white nationalism and separatism next week. Anyone who searches for this content via FB after this goes into effect will be directed to an anti-hate website.

Facebook is tailoring their AI to respect the dead.

The company said it hoped to stop the “painful” experience of getting suggestions to invite dead people to events, or to wish them a happy birthday.

On profiles, tributes to a person will now appear separately, keeping the deceased’s timeline as they left it.

"We hope Facebook remains a place where the memory and spirit of our loved ones can be celebrated and live on,” said Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s chief operating officer.

Users have often complained about being shocked and upset when Facebook nudges them to interact with a deceased loved one.

The whole "Remember this shit from years ago?!" thing is ass, too. Hits me when a photo of my dead pet pops. Or a friend who had a nasty divorce and things about their ex show.

Twitter co-founder & CEO Jack Dorsey addressed the platform's problems and avoided a user's question about abuse at TED 2019.

He said the firm might demote likes and follows, adding that in hindsight he would not have designed the platform to highlight these.

He said that Twitter currently incentivised people "to post outrage".

Instead he said it should invite people to unite around topics and communities.

Rather than focus on following individual accounts, users could be encouraged to follow hashtags, trends and communities.

"We've seen harassment, manipulation, misinformation which are dynamics we did not expect 13 years ago when we founded the company," he told TED curator Chris Anderson.

"What worries me is how we address them in a systematic way."

He said that Twitter was increasingly using machine-learning to spot abuse and claimed that 38% of abusive tweets were now identified by algorithms and then highlighted to humans, who decide whether to remove them from the platform.
One of the questions came from journalist Carole Cadwalladr who spoke at TED on Monday and called on the tech firms, including Twitter, to directly address the issue of misinformation being shared widely on their platforms.

But in her question to Mr Dorsey, she turned her attention to abuse she has received on Twitter.

"I'd like to know why a video that showed me being beaten up and threatened with a gun to soundtrack of Russian anthem stayed up for 72 hours despite 1000s of complaints?" she wrote.

Mr Dorsey did not address that question.

Instead he said that the company was in the middle of measuring the "conversational health" of the platform, using a number of metrics, including how toxic conversations were and how much people are exposed to a variety of opinions.

"We have to create a healthy contribution to the network and a healthy conversation. On Twitter right now you don't necessarily walk away feeling you learned something."

Facebook back in March originally reported "a few thousand" Instagram accounts had their passwords stored as readable text. On April 18th, while everyone was conveniently pouring over the Muller Report, an update on the post says the password snafu actually affected millions of users.

Yes, please. Can it buy craiglists next so we can have our missed connections and m4m sections back. The ads on those were always so amazing
