Found some things about the online service.

After my Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, will my online save data and my Nintendo Entertainment System™ – Nintendo Switch Online data be erased?

Save data stored via the Save Data Cloud backup is available for as long as you have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Classic games in the NES – Nintendo Switch Online collection and the save data for those games will not be removed unless the user chooses to do so manually. These items are stored locally on the Nintendo Switch system but cannot be accessed without an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Save data stored with Save Data Cloud cannot be kept outside of the duration of your Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online also uses the Save Data Cloud, so the same applies. However, if you keep the Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online save data saved locally on your Nintendo Switch console, then you can use it again if you purchase another membership.

I'm pretty excited for the Final Fantasy stuff. I'll probably be buying them all again, but Chocobo's dungeon was one of my favorites on the wii and I'm glad they are bringing it to switch. Hopefully it includes some of the stuff that came out in the DS version.

At this point, there are two options as to why they keep leaving FF8 out of everything.
Either they fucking hate the game and it's dead in their eyes, or they're actually secretly working on a Remake similar to FF7 and plan on releasing the old FF8 once the remake is announced.

They lost the source code for FF7-10 back in the day, which is technically their "official" reasoning whenever they got asked about remakes/ports back in the day, which is why all of the current remasters are done by a 3rd party developer and reversed engineered.

Also because 8 was terrible. I liked 8 for what it was, but it wasn't that great of a game compared to the rest. Still better than 7 though.

With 8, they basically tried to reverse engineer it off of the horrible PC port that still gives me nightmares from providing tech support on when I worked at EA is from what I heard, and they are just too lazy to redo everything.

I know it has already been said, but holding save backups hostage with an online subscription only option is just bad. Having no local save backup at this point is just kind of stupid. I still love this console and the games I have on it, but for a console that can be portable, it would be really nice to have some sort of local backup for people that actually take it on the go and could potentially lose/break it.

Which is funny for Splatoon 2 since a player recently hacked/cheated their way to the Top 4 just to write "Please", "Add", "Anti", and "Cheat" to the leaderboard. The game already has cheaters so the whole "preventative measure" thing is a load of shit.

On the eve of paid online, someone's unhappy again and decided to send yet another "message to Nintendo." Along with some of the first hackers in ranked wherein people are just hacking their ranks and taking top 500 crowns.

Yeah, this is the second time. The first time they wrote out "please add anti-cheat" taking all 4 top spots. Done normally those spots take several months of practice and hard work to get. Disheartening as I take the game seriously and am hoping to be competitive.

So far all I've done is casual. Tower Control was pretty interesting when I did Octo missions so might give it a go some time.

Though yeah it's amazing that Nintendo seems so oblivious to the cheating going on. According to Jim Sterling there's even a workaround against getting reported too.

Doesn't there have to be a copy of the save on the switch itself or else you'd never be able to play anything while offline? In which case, as long as you don't break or lose your switch during the time you decide not to remain subscribed, nothing changes because when you subscribe again, it'll just be copied to the cloud again?

The point is that it's not a long term backup solution. Which when it's the only solution available (unless you hack the system), is far from ideal. Issues with cloud saves wouldn't be as much of a deal if there was any kind of option to locally archive them, but Nintendo is so scared of hacking they won't allow it.

Which is funny since the system got hacked via an unpatchable hardware exploit that has nothing to with backing up saves. And they wouldn't have to be so terrified of hacking if they didn't bungle the online shit so goddamn bad on the 3DS. And now that the online system is so fucking bad in the Switch, they're basically encouraging people to hack the system.

Nintendo is teh dum. But we still all buy their fucking systems cause of Zelda.

Technically you're still losing all of your cloud back-ups. Sony stores them for 6 months, Microsoft & Valve for seemingly forever.
