Ils = male plural of "they", a group of 2 to 50000 dudes would be "ils"
Elles = female plural of "they", a group of 2 to 50000 women would be "elles"
A group of 50000 women with one dude mixed in defaults to "ils", the male plural of they.

Pretty much all romance languages have mandatory declensions for groups or nouns/pronouns like that with many have defaults depending on what is being talked about as well. Latin itself even does it for adjectives too and conjugation/declensions including "gender" in them is often the only way to tell what parts of speech are going with each other since they don't use word order to do so and some writers tend to have huge run ons with verbs and their subject being dozens of words apart
