Three dead (one of them being the truck driver) and 50 injured. Crash happened at a crossing that didn't have lights or electronic indicators to warn that a train was coming.
Sounds safe.
I didn't realize that was a thing
he didn't look both ways, look how flat that is, you can see something coming from nebraska
There's a crossing in the northern Chicago burbs with passenger and freight rail passing all the time. No indicators, no guards. Big yellow sign that tells you to listen for train coming. Unfortunately if you play music in your car you ain't gonna hear it.

Yeah but that was a dirt road on private land, less surprised there wasn't signals in that situation.
a farm hand colleague from way back when was killed when hit by a train running a road grader
rural crossings can be really dangerous
Perspective and Visual Illusions are in every part of life. One of the first things they taught us in the academy was to rely on instruments over your senses whenever possible, especially in situations where spatial disorientation may occur.
Perceptions of speed, length, width can be very misleading for the untrained eye
