Ratio includes households that don't have a vehicle too. Given the way the country is constructed to require vehicle transportation to survive. It means we don't actually have freedom of movement in America.

You act like I never done this before. I live in a higher latitude than some of Canada with worse winters. I stand by my statement. Best thing I ever did in life was get rid of the burden of car ownership.

Saying life is easier without a car at all is not a strong argument in favor of no garages in snowy climates.

Nor can everyone hope to live without a car, but it's not like we haven't babbled about how public transit outside of major US cities is ass due to impracticality and cost.

He obviously abuses 9 various breed of snow-dogs to pull his sled through the snow.

It's very practical. 100 years ago the majority of Americans used it to get to work, etc. The development of public transportation has intentionally been retarded though to suit the auto industry. Especially post WW2 onwards to today. Even before then though you had the GM street car conspiracy. Monopolist forces have always tried to control transit in America because it's that profitable.

100 years ago >30% Americans were farmers. You can bet that the majority weren't using public transit to get to work. The country was very different a hundred years ago.

Also, we have always been too spread out for some kind of national daily commuter public transit to make sense. City public transit and long distance public transit both make sense, but rural public transit (other than maybe infrequent busses) really doesn't.

It means the infrastructure was already there. It was removed and underfunded. Boston apparently had a great subway system at that time.

Sure, rural is one thing, but city transit lines are shit outside of exceptions like NYC.

Vermont just reopened a line to NYC. However, our trail infrastructure is also in a condition similar to the rest of infrastructure in America. Which means trains have to go slower, have more down time, and we don't have high-speed rail. Meanwhile, a larger country like Russia has shit/no roads, and lives on it's rails. There's no reason we can't have better lines.

Speaking of rails. There's an imminent US railroad worker strike that could be authorized on Friday if a deal is not reached. The two unions that are holding out represent about 60% of the workforce and a good chunk of that number are the train engineers.

Rail strike averted. Scheduling rules that was the core of the union grievances was addressed though few specific details have been released. The 5-year labor deal will now be sent out to union members for ratification.

Congress was set to act and/or would have forced the union to continue to work. Bargaining rules for rail unions differ than other industries in that Congress could dictate the terms of a new labor contract.

By siding with corporate interests like a typical president and as he has his whole career, yes—absolutely.
