I don't know how accurate the statistics here are, but implies crashes happen all the time. They're just all being reported now because it drives clicks

Literally none of those listed for 2023 or 2024 are crashes of airplanes in the US though

The Scottsdale, AZ one is attributed an unstable approach leading to a very hard landing resulting in a left landing gear failure + uncontrollable skid.

Flight from Minneapolis to Toronto crashed at Pearson this afternoon. The plane is upside down on the runway, which seems like a bad way for a plane to land. The airport is closed indefinitely, which is also not ideal because it's the busiest airport in Canada.

We have to reinstate DEI immediately, it was the only thing holding air travel together

Weather was 270/24G33 which has about 22 knots of crosswind component for Runway 23. With lower braking action on the runway this may simply be a case of excursion off the runway and wing strike. Runway 23 is almost 12000ft long and 200ft wide which is longer and larger than the standard.

That said, crosswind landings are always tricky. Wind tends to calm towards the ground which depending on the intensity forces you to make late adjustments. One annoying thing is that quite recently I’ve noticed that the tower reported wind is rather understated compared to actual conditions, on my last approach the reported xwind was 5 while the aircraft measured 11 on touchdown. It is quite possible that at the touchdown a strong gust could’ve pushed the conditions to the limits of the aircraft.

GPWS is quite capable at recognizing Wind Shear conditions with pronounced aural/visual alerts. Shear conditions are also quite noticeable for the pilots. If that was the case it’d be go around, no questions asked.

I don’t know CRJ but Boeing recommends good old and ugly “land in crab” in these conditions, as there is always a risk of nacelle/wing strike if you attempt to coordinate decrabbing with rudder and leveling wings with aileron while dealing with the crosswind and maintaining centerline during approach and after landing. Too much workload and ailerions may not always be efficient enough to level the wings.

Video of the crash from the cockpit of another plane. Looks like off-axis landing collapsed one of the landing gears.

Oof, that’s a very hard landing. Approach appears stable until the nose down input near threshold which could be pilot induced or windshear. Surprised this happened despite landing on main gear, I’ve seen several A 737’s/A320’s landing way beyond their limits, still able to park via its own means. Main landing gears are usually designed to take a fair bit of abuse.

saw a comment on instagram that the pilot passed out, copilot took over but didn't have time to adjust properly. Not 100% sure if accurate since haven't seen other info.

A small plane belonging to the Mötley Crüe singer Vince Neil veered off the runway at Scottsdale Airport in Arizona on Monday afternoon and struck a parked jet, killing a pilot and injuring three others. Mr. Neil was not on board, his lawyer said

Are people still pretending this is normal and just extra scrutiny making the media report it?

The FAA layoffs that people have been blaming this on just happened over the weekend. I'm still of the mindset this is fairly normal, it's just receiving extra attention because anything Trump adjacent generates views.
