I'm sure he thinks landing planes is just like a video game because the people are looking at screens. "Supercharged" the hiring process probably means they got a bunch of aviation wanabees who have a couple hundred hours in Microsoft Flight Simulator.
Turns out trading slurs with the tower isn't a transferable skill.

Full post has a video targeting Fortnite players
Its just a targeted recruitment campaign, I get that, cringe though it may be and a result of DOGE just fucking everything up to the point they even need to do this.
But man, fuck me the amount of times I've read some boomer or worse, person around my age, even on BSKY, say something like "You can't load your last save in real life" or "You can't respawn if you die" makes me want to Kyle a drywall.
Like its frustrating to me that Democrat or Republican, I'm inundated with Boomers who call every console a "Nintendo" and think people who play video games are tweaking pale teenagers from their favorite CSI show who can't tell the difference between reality and Video games because ICE-T said so.
All it takes is one Republican doing something like this for people to channel their inner Jack Thompson.
If the hiring campaign worked and the people stay hired / don't cause crashes, then I actually think this deserves some kudos. It's kind of a high risk way to test a "un/der-employed video gamers, they could be good at stuff too!" proposition, but I can see the logic to it. We have problems with ATC retention. Who does something that looks a lot like ATC work for fun? Gamers coordinating with their team over voice chat on Fortnite.
"It's actually not a bad idea..." he said before the ATC broke their old high score for runway crashes in a year.
Throughout my entire flight training and career as an airline pilot I always proudly attributed some of my handling skills to video gaming. What it does for hand eye coordination in a 3d environment is real. That said, the only “flight simulator” I played before was Gunship back in 90s.
MSFS, Xplane 12 are good for procedures training but in terms of aircraft handling they are completely different from the real thing. Only thing that gets close are full motion flight simulators airlines and training centers use.
I was also surprised how easy multi-task psychomotor testing felt for me when many others took at least 2-3 tries or failed for good.
One of my instructors knowledgeable on the subject in fact asked whether I’ve been playing “Atari” a lot when I was a kid; soon after my first run while I was training for assessments.
So yeah, I don’t think it makes sense to hire “gamers” just for the sake of it, but gaming as a hobby does have specific benefits just like all other hobbies.
They should train and hire some VATSIM people with a lucrative hiring bonus. They have seen some shit like 600 mph air balloons flying in the pattern.
I attribute my knack for cybersecurity entirely to video games, specifically PC games and having to mod/fix things and also pirate some shit since i was too poor to afford some stuff. As long as the training is still there and wasn't gutted by DOGE then this campaign will hopefully be good. High stress position so these recruits better have been raiding Savage/Mythic in FF14/WoW or playing Counterstrike professionally.
Gaming can certainly foster skills, but I guess I don't really see ATC work as a field with high transference.
