So as I had thought, the cinematography in the film is wonderful. Like award-winning stuff in terms of conveying both scale of the world we're in, power of the characters involved, and the time periods we criss-cross throughout the film. The acting is also excellent. For a 9-member cast they all communicated real emotional stakes and conflict. The interesting thing for me was that the film was so long but it didn't feel like anything needed to be cut. They really packed in a huge story and it took every second to get across. No wasted motions in the film.
Overall this was not as good as I had hoped it would be but far, far better than I had feared. A solid B+ film. Absolutely almost a completely different flavor than any other Marvel movie, but that honestly fits with the whole spirit of the Eternals. They've never really felt like a genuine part of the Marvel Universe, standing rather somewhat above or adjacent to it. I am one of the 5 people on Earth who've actually read Eternals comics (the other 4 being Jack Kirby and members of his immediate family) so I had a deeper investment than most - I can understand a lot of the changes in origin that were made and appreciate the attempt to stick to the source material as much as they did.
Just as background, the actual history of the Eternals is that millions of years ago, one that was sick threw up into Earth's primordial ooze, and from that vomit life on Earth began. That's the reason why Earth is such a source of super powers and otherworldy happenings, it's literally stewed in the internal juices of an almighty cosmic being. A few million years after that event, some Celestials returned and decided to screw around with the genetics of some of the life which had emerged, abducting some proto-humans and hyper-evolving some into Eternals (who were then locked in place in terms of development - eternally) and others into Deviants (who never stopped changing and evolving). Then they decided they didn't like the Deviants and set the Eternals about killing them. Given that background it's fair to see why they chose to go with a different origin (and throw in a little bit of Earth X).
This doesn't have many ties to the rest of the MCU except for references to Thanos and a pretty big hint that Shang-Chi is connected to them. That said, stick around for the mid-and-end credits scenes for what are certainly ties to the greater universe.
Overall I was not blown away, but this is certainly better than many other MCU films, and might even be unfair to rate against them because it's SO different.
