my buddy died about a year ago, and i'm still not really over it. i don't think i ever will be 'over it.'
but demo's right, ksan. you can have regrets. "i wish i'd done this" or "i wish i'd done that" but you can't let than transition into guilt. you had your own life to live, and for a while he wasn't part of it. that's perfectly normal in long-term friendships like that.
though high school and college, i didn't really talk to my buddy much. we were busy doing our own things. but we kept in touch. reconnected when our lives settled down a bit. i wish i'd made more of an effort to spend time with him, but life happens. i regret that we didn't spend more time together, but how was i supposed to know he'd have so little time? we were the same age. i thought we'd have roughly the same time, yknow? even after the accident he seemed invincible. like this was just another obstacle he'd overcome. and then he kept getting sick. and finally he stopped getting better. and then he gave up. i don't blame him. but it doesn't seem real. even now, i expect him to be there.
i know it's a fine line between regrets and guilt. i like to think i have pretty good control over my mind, but i still have times where i hate myself because of the things i should have done differently. i just try to keep them to a minimum, yknow?
