The way I understand it, progression now has multiple soft caps (not actually the best word, but it is the term the community is gravitating towards). The first and most obvious one is 500 which you will hit from blue drops just doing the campaign. After that, you have to start looking at powerful rewards. Things like the flashpoint, crucible, and gambit will give you large increases as you work your way to 520. Once you hit 520, those drops will only be +1 above your current light level (and not helpful if it is for a piece that is already higher than your current light level). At that point, activities like the Nightfall at 540 and high level activities in the dreaming city will give the largest increases. The blind well on its own is not going to give you any powerful rewards, but some of the bounties Petra offers will. Essentially, if the activity is higher than your current level, it will give you large increases. If you're over the activity's level, the powerful reward will reflect that. As ever, if the reset is approaching, throw all this out the window and knock out everything you can.
I had a lot of success playing crucible last week as every rank up gave a powerful reward (now that I'm over 520, I'm not seeing those same returns -- although maybe that's cause I've done one reset already..?). Also worked to ensure I got my prime engram each day.
