i will settle for 23.50 an hour no less
i will settle for 23.50 an hour no less
can't believe how hard this guy is whining that he should sit at home and make $23/hr for an undetermined amount of time. holy shit lol.
this is why republicans call liberals lazy. this right here
The point is
We shouldn't want non-essential employees to be working because there's a global pandemic that has killed 150k Americans and is only getting worse
Now look I get that there's no plan to stop it, the feds have basically long-since given up, but the idea that we should be encouraging people with threat of financial ruin to go to their workplaces and risk death right now is...insane.
well i think that is a new point than anything being discussed, but has some validity, but we cant stay locked down forever, other countries arent doing that afaik
on the other hand we been doing that for 4 months man these grocery store employees risking their lives for 10 an hour and people think they should receive double that to stay home. Im not against the bonuses, and i dont fault people for taking it, but to act like it wasnt a bit crazy in the first place, come on lets be a little realistic here, we know it was incredibly generous and we know its not sustainable.
this is the part i have the most problem with, not even grocery employees only either. RNs here in DSM make like $20/hr on average, they start at like $16/hr. idk if they are getting paid hazard pay currently or not but you're telling me someone on unemployment on average should make more? thats fucking nuts
Alternatively, whats nuts is people are only paying essential employees 16/hr

I think what's being forgotten here is that there were two rationales behind the federal UC benefit. First, to compensate people who lost their jobs during the pandemic so that could both stave off their own insolvency and buoy consumer spending for the greater health of the economy. By all measures that I've seen, it has been very effective at this.
The other reason was to keep people home. The fact that restaurants and bars are open in any capacity beyond takeout is ludicrous, and the government should have stepped in to take care of the small business owners and their employees by guaranteeing the funds to pay the owners' bills and their employees' wages on a guaranteed, continuing basis to instill confidence. In this scenario, these businesses go into government mandated and supported hibernation while the virus is contained, instead of trying to stay afloat at reduced capacity and volatile demand. I've worked in a lot of restaurants, and I can tell you with complete confidence that any restaurant that can make ends meet at even 75% capacity is either a front for something illegal, or somebody's midlife crisis project moneypit.
It goes without saying, but the government has failed miserably on the second point, and they did it on purpose.
The government paying unessential workers to stay home, rather than force them to choose between their health and financial ruin, is the cheaper, smarter, safer, and faster option for getting through the pandemic. But something something moral hazard, right?
The difference is other countries that are opening back up locked down heavily from the start, enforced mask mandates, and kept shit closed and only slowly opened up once daily cases were in the low double digits, if not even lower. The US on the other hand was completely varied, with some states only shutting down for a week or two, re-opened, then all had shocked pikachu faces when things exploded.
I'll also add that yes, it is a bit of a head-scratcher to pay people more to stay home than the people that are working essential jobs, or paying them more than they were making at their jobs.
If you remember, the original proposal was to replace people's wages to 100%, but that was determined to be unworkable due to the shambolic UC systems being run on the state level. Also note that the states that had the worst systems were those where Republicans had managed to starve the system of funds for decades. That's why they went with the $600/week for everyone.
Further consider that this problem was noted back in March, and that news reports today are saying it would take 8 to 20 weeks to repair the state systems to the point where a 70% wage replacement system would be workable.
There is absolutely a more fair and equitable way to handle UC in the context of the pandemic, but decades of starving the beast made that impossible. And then, rather than being proactive and fixing the system to be more equitable, they spent the last four months sitting on their hands and wishing the pandemic away.
Guys, this virus is here until everyone is either dead or recovered or an effective vaccine is produced, that's pretty much the end of it. May as well go back to work and school and let everyone die that's going to because this country will never come together to actually shut down for 2 months.

i shutdown for 4 months and all i got was this depression, everyone else wanted to go have a beer on the beach or gather by the tens of thousands to protest smh you might be right zealot, lets just rip off the bandaid
quarantined lives matter
yeah the guys that supported Yang and Bernie certainly hate that conversation
i mean Day did (checks notes) exaggerate what the average unemployed worker made during the past four months by almost a buck fifty
what further evidence is needed he hates the poor
what could possibly refute such
