I worked at Babbages back when I was in high school and our competitor was Electronics Boutique. Loved that job as I could root through the used games shipment and snag what I wanted for my SNES dirt cheap, as well as checking out games almost weekly. Then Walden Books poached my DM and Store manager, she then poached our ASM and the new people they hired pretty much destroyed the store. Manager was refusing to give me my highschool graduation day off, told him either to give me the day off or just fire me for a no show. Quit two weeks later, and randomly got called in by the new DM as it turned out the guy was sexually harassing any female customer who walked into the store.

I’ve always imagined myself working at a GameStop or something similar if I ever became ridiculously well off financially. Before I heard the horror stories from some of you guys lol.

There's a store in the mall back in my hometown that I swear must be that
There's consoles out you can play as much as you want and Atari games in their original packages, plus whole stacks of old strategy guides and toys.

There was a store like that in Reno when I lived there. The guy who owned the place was there every day playing games. He would give you some ridiculous prize if you could beat him at any game. It was a great place to go to find all your old school games and sometimes he had really good deals too. I got a bunch of n64 games from him and some Nintendo games too. My best friend bought a sega saturn from him and a bunch of games.

Xno I'll help you with the initial stock of your game 'n chill store, and it'll be more than a Joe Montana Chiefs hat.

I worked at a GameStop a few years part-time in college, and like most any menial job, satisfaction or lack thereof is largely dependent on managers and coworkers.

In 3 years, I saw 4 store managers with the whole gamut represented. First dude who hired me was great, and the store environment was pleasant, fun, and we even played on the clock occasionally. Second guy was alright, third guy was pathetically inept, and the DM really fucked up placing him as a SM, which later got them both fired. Last one was still somehow the worst (also the only female). I booted the computer at like 9:02am once instead of < 9:00, and she said I can't be a keyholder anymore and would require formal discipline. I just quit after that; it was my last semester, and I'd already accepted a job after graduation.

I still miss the good days that were there. One of the old assistant managers was a great guy and always a fun conversation. I thoroughly enjoyed any time we were both working and usually learned something new from him. And I'll always cherish the BioShock launch goodies from 2008.

I know the target audience sometimes ain't really that great but I don't understand why American/European game companies are so damned hostile to their fans for wanting basic decency. Between the franchise game stores and the whole lootbox/gambling shit going on.

I worked at a Gamestop for a year.
In that one year, I had 4 store managers (3 were cool), and 2 district managers.

Our store was a top performer.

The 2nd DM was straight from the Texas HQ, walked in day 1 and 2 and wrote up the store manager both times (3 is termination), to pull a "dance to my tune bitch". This was close to the holiday season.
After waiting a bit, the store manager threatened to quit right before black Friday. DM had an "o fuk" moment, and bent over and the store manager got to hire back his best SGA as ASM, and hire on a solid dude he knew as a SGA. And they ALL did a "fuck you, you're cool, I'm out" after Christmas. I loved those guys, they were fucking awesome.

Then the DM pulled a brown nosing store manager from another location, and they brought their crew. A location that was a poor performer because they and their hires were shit, a good number of our regulars were people from that store's footprint because they didn't want to deal with them. I soon received 0 hours a week and the "just give 2 weeks notice" treatment.

I worked at Gamestop between undergrad and grad school. Got offered a manager position if I wanted to transfer when I moved for grad school, said no thanks.

My manager was cool as hell and the store was a busy one (but slower than my other retail job).

People that come in 5 minutes before closing, wanting to trade old games, then barter over the price were probably the most frustrating part to deal with.

But it was cool being able to 'rent' out any used game I wanted.

Working at GameStop because you enjoy video games is like working at Cracker Barrel because you enjoy food or becoming an RMT because you enjoy an MMO. Best not to do that.

My fiancee works at Gamestop. She's working right now. The store 'closed' an hour ago. But she's still fucking working because the store hasn't had internet in 3 days, and likely won't until Monday. The ISP has sent a tech out. Tech thinks it's the firewall (hardware, not software). Gamestop IT, who have not sent a tech out, think it's the fucking ethernet cable between the modem and router, and instead of sending someone out to fix it they're sending a fucking ethernet cable and making the just-above-minimum-wage employees with no training fix it. Someone at Gamestop IT must have escalated the problem, though, because someone caught wind of the ISP tech's diagnosis and decided to also send a new firewall (but still no tech to install it).

So my fiancee is over there unable to clock in/out, unable to sell anything digital (including gift cards and such), unable to accept any membership cards that were created from any other store, unable to do price changes, unable to process card transactions, unable to take in trades.... the list of broken shit is endless. So she's having to work extra just to compensate for the lack of functioning computers.

All while their store leader (who is genuinely a good dude, and good boss) is off at a mandatory Gamestop conference, and her district manager is nonexistent (one of the aforementioned fired DMs). Semi-related fun fact: The DM is the lowest position with the authority to close a store temporarily, and even they need higher approval first. So all those god-awful blizzards we had this past winter, where even emergency services were shut down, my fiancee was at work because no one was allowed to close the store.

Gamestop is failing because they're top-heavy.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/busin...cted-cbo-says/

The U.S. federal deficit will expand by about $800 billion more than previously expected over the next decade, as recent increases in spending are on track to push the nation into levels of debt unseen since the end of World War II, the Congressional Budget Office said Wednesday.

The annual U.S. deficit will come close to hitting $1 trillion in 2019, an unusually high number during a period of economic growth, the CBO added. Driving that number is spending as well as a large tax cut in corporate and individual income taxes passed by Republicans in 2017.

The new deficit estimates could deepen worries that U.S. policymakers face a shortage of tools to bolster the economy should the country fall into recession, some economists say. In addition to potentially less room to spend or pass tax cuts, the Federal Reserve cannot reduce interest rates, which are quite low, as much as it has during previous downturns.

Dollar Tree/Family Dollar to pay a $1.2M fine for selling expired over-the-counter drugs and outdated products like motor oil (that has a shelf life of 2-5 years).

The settlement, according to an announcement from the New York Attorney General, comes as the result of a months-long undercover investigation that found Dollar General sold obsolete motor oil, some of which wasn’t suitable for engines built after 1930. What’s more, Dollar Tree and Family Dollar violated the state’s bottle deposit law and all of the discount retailers sold expired over-the-counter drugs.

Dollar General agreed to stop selling obsolete motor oil and to pay $1.1 million in restitution, damages and penalties. Customers who bought the motor oil can file a complaint online.

“We continue to believe that the DG-branded motor oil products at issue meet both the company’s standards for quality and value, but also all applicable federal and state labeling, marketing and placement requirements where they are sold,” Dollar General said in a statement.

On the issue of expired drugs, Dollar General said it “took immediate action to address the situation, and we continue to work with our store teams to ensure that the company’s expectations regarding expired products are clearly communicated, understood and implemented.”
They're also paying a $100k fine for violating a bottle deposit law.
