Saw it, wasn’t a fan really. Angela Bassett was wonderful, as was any scene really that paid homage to Chadwick. You could tell there was a lot of real emotion in there. But I felt overall the movie was pretty loooooooong and the final action sequence was just silly bad. Shuri going full on r/atheist when like…bro, you live in a world where these supernatural things are empirically proven to exist, come on now.

Also Lupita Nyongo was fine as fuck in the movie. The scene where she and Angela Bassett are just walking down a hallway and Lupita is in a sun dress is 10/10

Art imitates life, it's pretty on-brand for the character to just be a denier.

That's fair. There's nothing wrong with liking things that are bad.

Wife and I felt the same, really. Phenomenal acting and Namor was great, but Marvel keeps focusing on building a world without laying the foundation and the result is the characters and story come off as a secondary thought rather than driving the narrative.

What the eff movie do you have to have watched to think Shuri's arc did not drive the narrative of this film.

The CIA scenes should've been cut almost entirely if not 100%. The movie otherwise was pretty sweet though.

As with Thor: LaT, Eternals, Black Widow, and Shang-Chi, I'm glad I waited to watch this on D+ instead of at a theater.

I though the movie was very subpar. As others have stated, it was very bloated. Acting was indeed solid all around, but the writing was meh, at best. I get that the passing of Boseman really fucked with whatever plans Marvel had for the movie, but IMO they did a poor job "rebounding", if you can call it that. Riri Williams had no business being in this movie other than hyping up her upcoming show. The movie could have 100% happened without her in it. Same goes for the CIA mini-arc with Freeman/Louis-Dreyfus (Thunderbolts "promotion"). Talokan scenes felt like they dragged out for way too long, and as a person who generally overloooks botchy CGI in movies, this was pretty bad. Shuri's Black Panther was laughable. Was not, at all, one bit convincing. Her very slim frame was insanely distracting. Should have just Man-Ape'd M'Baku already if they were going to make him king at the end, though I can see that backfiring as well. T'Challa tribute was dope, as was seeing Namor come to life on a screen.

Also, going to war against the underwater nation in the open sea? Really? Fucking amazing how that idea was thought of, written, read, approved, green-lit, filmed, edited and released. FFS.

There was no way to lure a small group of them onto land to fight. Anytime they left the sea after declaring war, it would have been with the whole army. I would rather fight 30 of them at sea, rather than thousands of them on land after they have already fucked up the capital.

The underwater fight had a reason though. They were going to use the sonic waves to subdue them, but it backfired. The plan was fine.

My biggest issue with newer MCU movies is the need to shove things into them just to reference comics or set up shows/movies instead of letting the after credits do that.

Each movie felt like its own story in a larger world, and now it feels like each movie is just a means to building the world around it rather than letting the world build itself.

Avengers felt grand because we knew the characters and it was cool seeing them come together after whatever they went through and seeing how they changed around each other over time.

These days the changes don't make sense and serve the story, which is why it seems like all these characters do illogical shit.

I just watched Antman 3 and BP2. Ready for this? I liked Antman better.

BP villain was good. Premise just didn’t make sense though and that was just way too hard to ignore. And this film was just way too long. Cut out the FBI stuff. Cut out the Riri stuff. Cut out that blue armor suit. All unnecessary. And I’m not holding it against the film, but personally I thought they should have just recast T’Chala.
