I'd assume it will have the pitfall of all the Bethesda sandbox games where as you interact with the world more and the game has more things to keep track of in the background it will get worse.
I'm maxing out at around 80-120FPS w/ my rig @3k. Acceptable frames for a game like this but it indicates that lower end hardware is going to strugglebus in some areas. Game definitely would've benefited bigly from DLSS3 or even as a tech showcase of AMD's new ghetto framegen solution.
I've crashed 5 times, but not at all after capping the framerate.
I thought it was just me being on a laptop (and thus power budget limited) but from looking around on reddit this game weirdly draws a low amount of wattage out of my GPU.
Laptop has a max TGP for 175W for the 4090 but the game never really goes past 140W, and seeing similar from people with desktop 4000 series cards where the game draws way less power than it could. Flipping off the upscaling still reduces framerates so it's not just a CPU limited situation.
Mine's drawing an appropriate (350~400w) amount.
After about 8 hours now I'm wondering how much of the universe is just barren planets that are nothing more than a place to go collect crafting mats and one or two random dungeons with generic enemies.
Even planets in the Sol system like Venus are just the procedural generation with a few random landmarks thrown in
Edit : I'm already also seeing repeating dungeons on different planets. Different color palette/texture materials, but identical layouts
Bethesda gon Bethesda
Welp I know what I'm about to do
I'm not super far in the game idk how well it holds up but it was a lot better than my mining suit
i've gone a bit piratey and all my companions / the lodge members fuckin hate me, but the robot is good with it. come with me new HK, come with me and let us paint the stars red
also agree with Kran and thus far the exploration side of it is underwhelming (tho not bad), but there are so many god damn quests and sidequests and activities, overwhelming amount of scripted stuff to do. and feels p good doing it as the systems are solid. takes as much from Mass Effect 2's design as No Man's Sky.
yeah but who cares about that nerd shit how does it rate in fashion souls
Honestly it looks pretty good. I prefer the lighter looking spacesuit to the bulky monstrosity was wearing before.

So PureDark released a better version of his DLSS mod for Starfield that enables Frame Gen. Reportedly nearly doubles FPS by bypassing much of the CPU bottleneck, especially in cities. It's locked behind patreon though.
edit: can confirm it works and raised my FPS on a 4090 from 80~100ish in New Atlantis to 120~150ish. can see why AMD didn't want this game to get DLSS, the CPU bottleneck really skews things hard when you can use frame gen. also enables Reflex.
Getting 120-140 with render res set to 100% and DLAA turned on.
It seems like after they got shit for it you don't have to keep a continuous subscription to use the frame gen mod. Authenticate the first time you use it and you're gtg after that.
With that in mind I threw them the 5 bucks, and yeah it works beautifully. Can get away with running my laptop in the balanced profile for lower temps and still stay well above 60 fps, which is all I'm really worried about performance wise.
Having the frame gen turned on ended up making my game pretty unstable, saw quite a few crashes while it was turned on.
Im gonna say it, the UI sucks the maddest of ass
I mean it's a Bethesda game, the base UI is always ass.
My biggest complaint is having to run point to point when you're on a planet surface. Fucking game is making me wish for the Mako.
