Two fails:

Hubby’s cousin is in the ICU with a fractured skull. I guess her and her husband were waiting for a store to open and saw one of those bird scooters. He tried it t, then she tried it. Somehow her purse got tangled in the bar. When she tried to untangle it she fell and hit her head.

I'm trying to picture this - she tried to get her purse untangled from her scooter while it was stopped and she fell?

I ride them a lot when there isn't a safe place to leave my bike and I wiped out once at full speed trying to be fancy. only ended up with a skinned up forearm fortunately. People eat shit on them all the time though

So, further telling says it wasn't tangled but she took her hand off briefly while it was in motion. Her husband suspects it was to grab her shifting purse.

She had several skull fractures and is bleeding from her ears.

Still in ICU. It doesn't sound like she's going to make it. There's always hope though.

It took me nearly 2 hours to find out where the hell the last 3 dollar discrepancy in my dad's accounting report I have to submit to the VA by the end of the month. And it was all my fault because I put an 8 instead of a 5 for an entry on the spreadsheet. FML

My hypothesis and anecdotal evidence leads me to believe that most of the bad accidents are with people that probably shouldn't be on them, whether it's because they've never ridden a scooter before or aren't familiar with riding scooters/bikes/skateboards/rolling things etc.

I think the scooters give a false sense of relative safety since you can seemingly step off at any time and they are so "easy" to ride and go about 15 mph like it's nothing.

I regularly see couples on them where the dude seems comfortable enough but the girl looks pretty unsure and is probably at high risk of wipeout if the slightest thing goes wrong. Then of course the dude is swooping around like it's the xgames and the girl is afraid of seeming lame

I don't really know what the solution is... but wearing a helmet is a start even though no one does.

Witnessed a minor collision at work during my overtime traffic detail. Pain in the ass because insurance companies might be calling me for my report of witness and had my camera on too ( which is required anyway). 8 months and this was the first time.

It royally sucks. Her son has a lot of health issues (preemie), too. When he was little he had to have a hole in his neck with a tube to breathe. I think it was two years ago when they could finally have it removed and sealed up.

I think that the states should put it on these companies that they have to have a helmet hooked to them. And that it's against the law for people to ride one without it.

Overall, it seems like cities absolutely hate them. When driving to the hospital you could see them lying all over the side walks.



Ideally, these would be a great way to encourage greener travelling, but let's face it, we aren't responsible enough to have them.

They do fine in Oakland but we have fairly extensive bike infrastructure.

But yeah I'd like to see enforcement of people wearing helmets and riding sidewalks but the police here can't be bothered
