A television station in Rochester, New York, fired a meteorologist Sunday after he used a racial slur on air.
During WHEC-TV's Friday evening broadcast, Jeremy Kappell said "Martin Luther Coon Park," when referring to a downtown Rochester park named after slain civil rights movement leader Martin Luther King Jr.
In a video viewed by CNN, Kappell says "King" immediately after using the slur and continues with the broadcast.
Clearly a Freudian slip of deep racism and an intolerable offense. HANG 'EM!
Great, now that I know he's gay he's not as hot anymore. Is nothing sacred?!
i mean with all the porn that exists of him and reyes was there any doubt before?![]()
there was a bunch of Bucky x Steve stuff too and man people were mad about that not being the case. To ship or not to ship you still going to make someone's naughty bits unhappy
I can't prove a negative that he "Isn't racist" so i can't argue to that effect, and I get it its a stretch... but we have no evidence other than suspicion of his intent, nor do we even seem to have evidence of past "racist" offenses to at least corroborate the idea, unless someone wants to raise their hand as mind reader my mockery of this entire situation stands. With the severe lack of corroborating evidence to reasonably prove intent, Its just a Witch Hunt. He said a bad word and they wanted his head and the higher ups decided it wasn't worth the trouble or bad PR to defend him and just handed to the mob.
IDK, just seems more like a public apology should have been enough considering the circumstances with no prior offenses.
But I'm big enough to admit this may just be me projecting my hate for the run away monster that is "Social media mob justice".
Unless you've associated something with a word before you're not going to randomly say it accidentally. So yes he's a racist in private and it finally leaked out. You don't say Martin Luther Coon randomly unless you've been saying it before. It's like all slurs they don't just happen unless you've been exposed to or using the slurs.
While this does happen to people it doesn't mean that is always the case. If you hear something enough times, you too will eventually come to associate that something with what it was describing. Dude might have racist family or friends that call MLK a coon all the time so whether he likes it or not, it's already associated in his head. Obviously, he could still have racist thoughts all on his own. I'd honestly give the guy the benefit of the doubt and believe he fucked up the pronunciation of King since both words start with a hard K sound and I've heard people fuck up simple words when they are talking in the weirdest of ways. He just fucked up in the worst way possible in today's environment.
I do shit like that all the time, like multiple times a day. it's never been a racist slip but I constantly shove two words together when I'm talking (especially when I'm anxious). speech disorders like that are fairly frequent and I'm not even sure I would call them disorders to be honest; it's fairly normal. to add to that, the "k" in "King" easily combines with the "oo" sound in either Luther or Junior - that type of syllable mashing is precisely the type of aphasia that I experience frequently and also seems (anecdotally) frequent in the general population. aside from that, the idea that all slips must be Freudian in nature and somehow indicate an underlying tendency is laughable. slips are slips; the brain is fucking weird. maybe he heard that word a lot growing up from his racist grandma, who knows?
I'm not saying he isn't racist because frankly we don't know either way, and I understand the station's decision to fire him for PR reasons. with that said, we have seen no evidence of a history of racist behavior nor any corroboration of such behavior by anyone who knew him. so the most logical conclusion is that he is not in fact a closet racist.
i also screw up my words all the time too. i could definitely see him accidentally fumble on king and using the wrong vowel instead of I. i've not accidently used a racial slur myself, but i've certainly said the wrong syllable or word all the time. i'm just not very good at this "talking" thing.![]()
Come on son. As Yuri pointed out Luther and Junior both have the "oo" sound of coon, but I'd focus more on King and Junior as as the culprit here. slapping King and Junior into one word due to a verbal slip up would end up with "Coon" if you catch yourself before the ior part which as the video below shows, he caught himself even before what sounds like the "N" in Coon, and I'm far more willing to consider it an unfortunate slip of the tongue than brand the man as Racist when you consider there is zero past evidence he's racist.
You cannot with a straight face told me you've never mashed together two words by talking too fast or simply slipping up, his verbal mistake was that the unfortunate combination of King and Junior would be phonetically sound like a racial slur in pronunciation. This is even his explanation of the situation in his response video, he spoke too fast and combined the two words.
Edit: took me long enough but I found the original video finally here
He doesn't even say "Coon", he says "Coo" and corrects with King very quickly. I think it was just an honest slip with an unfortunate phonetic outcome.
At least we can agree on this, that hideous article needs to burn.
Lol y'all are going through some great lengths to excuse this racism coming from fucking ROCHESTER NEW YORK. I have to laugh. It's true people will bend over backwards to make excuses for a white man.
