The words arent really similar, you really would have no reason to use that word in your life ever unless you were watching particular seasons of south park, and even if it was truly an accident, if ratings suffer than it doesnt matter and you have to go.

I don't really disagree with him being fired for the aforementioned reasons since him staying employed at that station, regardless of what made him say Coon, would be a PR nightmare for the station. This thread is a prime example. My issue is outright labeling the dude a racist, no take-backs.

Yeah, but the only reason it is happening these days is because a very loud minority of individuals are willing to jump to ridiculous conclusions about individuals based on a single incident.

Because otherwise they would be labeled as the news with the racist weatherguy regardless of whether or not he's actually racist.

Considering the demographic his news probably reaches I doubt it would even cause a blip on the radar. Most of the world doesn't behave like this, simply a very sensitive, and loud, minority of people.

Another thing to keep in mind is that for companies like this, these are micro decisions, not macro. It's minimal risk management to a company that is unwilling to sacrifice even the smallest amount of viewership, sales, etc.

People have been fired for things they've said on air and off air, on social media, etc. So why is this the line in the sand for people?

Some folks get super defensive when people draw a direct line between an offensive action and an offensive mindset. Karb's over here flailing indignantly because of the assumption that "doing something racist" equates without qualification to "holding racist beliefs." The latter, of course, cannot be proven. People aren't mind readers. No one's beliefs can ever be viewed plainly. Instead, all we ever have to go on are actions and words.

People with racist beliefs will probably end up taking racist actions. People without racist beliefs will probably not end up taking racist actions. Ergo, people who take racist actions probably hold racist beliefs.

Blurting out racial slurs on live TV is a fairly racist action. The person taking that action may be a non-racist who done goofed, but odds are they're probably just a racist.

Honestly, half these folk wouldn't have had anything to talk about if you'd just used a fucking qualifier pages ago.

Bonus: We fire people based on their actions (including voicing shitty beliefs), not their actual internal beliefs.

Which, to me, is where you have to look at ones actions and see if they align with their words.

If it was a slip, and it's a first offense, you forgive but don't forget right away. Hell, if they wanted to just take him off weather broadcasting for a bit and get some other trained (I was going to say monkey, but that could be deemed offensive) puppet up there to deliver that information they could have easily done that while they looked to see if they wanted to continue his employment.
