Concluding an argument by identifying yourself as, "right" and the other person as, "wrong" is just about the least sophisticated form of thought in the entire universe. So as sound as his logic may seem to him, he has articulated it so poorly that it hardly constitutes him having been the victor of this argument. He also continually demonstrates an insane amount of hypocrisy within every debate he engages in by completely failing to even begin to try to understand that there is an alternative possibility other than the one he has already adopted. And I use that word with great accuracy. Adopted. He seems purely incapable of original thought.

Nobody's actually arguing with him anymore, it's simply what he represents. And it's the absolute erosion of critical, rational and productive debate in any manner.

Anyone who can read posts where I said "I agree he might be racist but..." and somehow interpret that as going hard in the paint to defend a guy who used a slur can just go ahead and enjoy that because your reading comprehension ain't my problem. I mean I literally said at one point that I understood why they fired him because of the PR nightmare, even though I disagree with the decision personally. I literally fucking said that already. And as far as the job goes, Bernice King is on my side (that he should keep it but apologize) - so I'm fine with that.

I mean I've said that he might be racist, he might have said the word itself, etc. I never said it was definitely just a slip of the tongue, just that it MIGHT be. It's like the word "might" confuses the fuck out of people and they throw everything that precedes it right out the damned window!

My tolerance for who people who say slurs out of place is at an all time low. Mostly thanks to the current federal admin and the scumbags who supported it. Anyone who expected this to go any other way is deluding themselves.

I'd give him a bigger benefit of the doubt if he said "Coong" instead of "Coon", but he couldn't even try to play it off like that. Just straight racial slur.

It's the only one that makes sense if you go with the earlier posters logic of "well king is similar to coon" even though that is clearly not the case. I'd sigh and say fine w/e if I heard the G at the end but nah son, straight "Martin Luther Coon"...

Eh, I could see combining King and Junior for Martin Luther Kooniur. Not saying that's what happened, but I could see my slightly dyslexic mind putting those things together on accident.

I'm not defending him though. I'm saying he might have been racist, might have said it on accident. I guess that could be perceived as defending him but it really isn't; defending him would be saying "He definitely didn't do anything wrong and here's why." My point is that we don't know for sure what went on in his head and in his heart that day, and there is no evidence we've seen of any prior racist behavior, yet everyone is jumping to the conclusion that he must absolutely be a POS racist asshole. I've said multiple times that maybe he is, but it doesn't seem like it to me. I've also said that I understand the decision to fire him in this political climate even if I disagree with it personally.

I did say I think he should have his job back and that we should accept his apology at face value; I suppose that counts as defending him, but I'm hardly the only person in that boat (plenty of famous names and other progressives are there alongside me). And to be frank my point of view on that issue matters a lot less than the point of view of someone who is a person of color; the injured party is the one I would respect most in this scenario. But I can recognize that and still express my thoughts on the matter.

Last note: I will defend until the day I die the possibility that he accidentally said the word by combining phonemes because, as I said, I do that all the time. Every day, multiple times a day. My mouth is a little bit dyslexic. The idea that it would take a "k" sound and an "oo" sound and then somehow end up with "coon" is not outside the realm of possibility, and while everyone is free to believe what they want on that matter I'm just not buying the argument that it's impossible. The brain is a very, very weird thing. Please note: I said the possibility that he did this. POSSIBILITY.
