I'm not defending him though. I'm saying he might have been racist, might have said it on accident. I guess that could be perceived as defending him but it really isn't; defending him would be saying "He definitely didn't do anything wrong and here's why." My point is that we don't know for sure what went on in his head and in his heart that day, and there is no evidence we've seen of any prior racist behavior, yet everyone is jumping to the conclusion that he must absolutely be a POS racist asshole. I've said multiple times that maybe he is, but it doesn't seem like it to me. I've also said that I understand the decision to fire him in this political climate even if I disagree with it personally.

I did say I think he should have his job back and that we should accept his apology at face value; I suppose that counts as defending him, but I'm hardly the only person in that boat (plenty of famous names and other progressives are there alongside me). And to be frank my point of view on that issue matters a lot less than the point of view of someone who is a person of color; the injured party is the one I would respect most in this scenario. But I can recognize that and still express my thoughts on the matter.

I was just reading an article about the woman in a vegetative state who was raped in the nursing home. It had some statistics in it that were disturbing. It said women with disabilities are sexually assaulted at 3-4 times the rate that able bodies women are. They are exceedingly more likely to face other forms of harassment too. Fucked up.

The more different the person is from what is considered the norm or what is right, the more discrimination or problems a person faces and the easier the rest of the people in the norm group ignore or excuse that discriminatory behavior.
