Again, I try not to pay too much attention to it, but it does appear to be happening at an increased rate. It could very well be as Gred said. It's just attempting to make people that are playing the games/watching this content feel more included or trying to get more people into the seats/playing their games. That's fine. I get it, it just seems disingenuous to me.
Is it legitimate to assume that Rey being the "main" hero of the new Star Wars protagonist trio is disingenuous pandering?

The assumption that it is pandering is sort of the point in all this. People are taking it for granted that minority characters are being given important roles just because.

The fact people have problems with Rey highlights the fact that many people are conditioned with the expectation for a white guy to be the important Jedi savior and when that expectation was disturbed it sets off a visceral rejection. These ragers feel they are being pushed out when they no longer have a monopoly on being the central character.

That's what Brie Larson is getting at. This is a film where white males are not the center of the universe and it's not going to cater to those expectations. It's not that the studio has a stance of "Yeah fuck off white guys we don't care about you" but rather "Everyone watches stories with white guys being the main character without throwing a fit, you should be able to watch a story where a woman or a person of color is the centerpiece without getting offended."

What in Star wars, Ralph, Cars, or Incredibles was disingenuous insertion of identity politics?

Did Star Wars even mention race or sex at all? Is Incredibles (a movie set in the what, 50s?) not allowed to be about the struggles of a working mom and stay at home dad without it being disingenuous?

I honestly have no idea what you are talking about here. I'd argue the other stuff, but haven't watched or played them.

Yeah I don't see it at all with Star Wars or Incredibles 2... Ghostbusters I guess could be argued since the group being female doesn't seem to be rooted deeply in the story and just kinda happens to be what they chose. Haven't seen the rest yet.

Incredibles 2 their choice to make the mom the focus totally made sense to the story. And it is a very topical subject for the times. As Eurell stated the struggles of a mom and dad balancing work and life and shifting roles has been explored in media for a long time.

Yeah the only issue I see in those movies is what Gredival said

Ask yourself this. Why shouldn't the main character be a woman or a person of color?

*sigh* It shouldn't matter. That's my point. It shouldn't be some sort of virtue signal to people. To me, that's what it comes across as.
Make a good story, with good characters, the characteristics that they can't control don't matter.

I really don't have the energy for this. I'll just go back to lurking as I usually do. Clearly, noone seems to see where I'm coming from at all and that's fine. I'll go back to my little corner.

I'm not saying I agree with the people that are doing whatever or saying whatever. I'm just saying I can see where they are coming from.

We don't see where you're coming from because you listed off a bunch of movies that happen to have females as major characters, but gave 0 reason as to why you think those roles were pandering. Being female had 0 bearing on Rey's character. Being black meant nothing for Finn. Being female matter for elastigirl, but only because its a family movie about a working mom and stay at home dad, it fit.

Give us something to work with here.

Fine, when I get some time tonight I will elaborate. I've already put too much energy into this than I care to, but I'll see what I can do.

There is nothing except manufactured outrage because people are not used to seeing main roles go to someone who isnt a white passing Male. Yall thinking too hard on this one. If people see identity politics in any of those movies he listed, then they're the problem lol.

It does matter. To people who grew up their entire lives seeing someone else in the role of the hero, representation matters a lot. What you see as virtue signaling, those of us who are part of a minority see as media catching up to reality.

If you did a statistical analysis of sexuality, race and gender in entertainment and then compared it to the statistical reality of the United States, do you think it would line up or do you think it would be heavily distorted? That's the point. We exist, and we want to see that reality reflected in the entertainment we consume.

You dont understand man, it makes no sense to cast a woman as the new jedi. It's all pandering!

Just wanted to say Ghostbusters was fucking terrible and that's a good example of a movie that went above and beyond out of it's way to alienate a fanbase, weaponized identity politics, and made it all about gurl powah.

"Oh so you didn't like the movie? You're a misogynist!"

Yeah I can see it in Ghostbuster's case.

I don't have anything against all female team movies or whatever, but I feel like they should make a new movie instead of just taking an older one and replacing all the male characters. Why not try a new idea?

Ghostbusters remake is a good example of weaponizing identity politics to cash in. Those other examples not so much.

PC Principal V: What The Fuck Am I Reading

If anything Last Jedi did a disservice to female characters going forward for future movies in the franchise. All the women in 8 were unapologetic retards who only did shit cuz reasons.

This is what I took as Vandal's argument:
It seems like some of these studios/cast/organizations are making statements about how times are changing and people aren't going to like it. Because of this some people are feeling attacked, like what they enjoy is somehow offensive just for existing as it has. The more vocal among this group take to the social media platform of their choice and these statements get picked up by larger media outlets and twisted into a generalization that an entire subculture feels this way. In addition, there are some instances where characters or storylines are inserted into an existing source material just to try to push an agenda, similar to the Ghostbusters remake. People are being called out as bad people just because they don't like when these situations happen, when really they just want the story and characters to be one cohesive unit. If everything were one cohesive unit then there would be less "manufactured outrage."

Of course in that case, you're still going to have that vocal minority spewing BS about everything just being part of an agenda.

You'd think the internet is enough for people like that. You don't need a damn video game to get off. But, if that's your big kink and it's gotta be that, hit up all the games like that on Steam and other services.
