This right here perfectly sums it up. The only reason it seems like pandering is simply because straight white males are used to already having media representation as "the hero" in any story and any deviation of this is met with "but why does it matter?"
Well it does matter to those who don't fit into that category, especially those growing up who don't see themselves in most protagonists in media. Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse is a good example of this, where as the cast/crew said perfectly at the Academy Awards: "This film shows everyone that anyone, no matter race/gender can be behind the mask."
On a related note, one of my favorite twitch streamers was asked this question: "How would you feel if the developers made Link (The Legend of Zelda hero) Gay?" and his response perfectly mirrors this issue, but from a straight male perspective: "Can... can they not? I don't want Link to be gay because I want to imagine I'm Link and I want him to get together with Zelda!"
Which I felt was the same with the Ocean's 8 movie when they were going through their press as well.
I apologize because I was thinking Star Wars VIII and I typed Star Wars VII. Last Jedi was the one I was referencing.
Thank you. You have done a way better job interpreting what I was trying to say than what I was able to communicate.
I'm trying my best to not start a back and forth with this response. I guess I should get that one rando's handle on twitch so I can go to him for the approved stance that speaks for all straight while males then.
But it's not a small majority of nerd culture weaponizing their misogyny, sexism, homophobia, etc. Nerd culture has deep roots in gate keeping anyone that isn't a str8 white dude out.
These aren't a few people doing this and getting picked up by the mainstream media. It's a significant proportion of man child who can't handle that everything isn't about them and shouldn't cater to them.
All the movies you listed weren't shoe horning identity politics or viture signaling in them. They were presenting these characters with realistic problems actual people face and deal with.
That moment when RoV came out and you realized all the main story characters were chicks.
I don't think this matters to the discussion, but I'm throwing it in there anyway. Suck it.
Never underestimate Japan's loli fetish.
Antonio Banderas is the biggest role model we got. Meanwhile Zoe Saldana plays a black chick in the majority of her roles.
Black/blue/green versus a Hispanic maybe once or twice? GG Hollywood.
I’m stuck getting a Sheneneh barbie doll for my future daughter.
