I'm of the belief the gender, lack of, sexual orientation, or trans/not of a fictional character is a pretty fucking stupid thing to even remotely care about enough to call someone racist. in Rowling's defense there was a decent bit of subtext Dumbledore was gay. Grindelwald was the only passionate relationship of his life, the man loved comfy socks which is queer as hell, McGonagall was the ultimate beardy hag to hang out with an old queen, etc.

retconning Hermione as possibly black is nonsense, but there are even stories of Rowling striking out references to Dumbledore and girls he dated from the movie scripts before she broke the news publicly. most authors write far more about their characters than they put into their books, and i think a lot of the Dumbledore backlash was from reactionary types ignorant of basic literary theory. as Hemingway once put it
