I think the Rock criticism is that John Henry is undoubtedly "black" but The Rock is just generically ethnic. It's being treated like a white washing with "generic minority" for black.

They want The Rock to be like that light-skinned girl who refused a part in Black Panther because she didn't think she was dark enough.

I was watching The Godfather and Godfather II like a week or two ago and there’s so much shit in those movies that wouldn’t fly today lol. Like when the other mob bosses are trying to get Vito to sell drugs, but only to the blacks to keep the streets clean. Or when Pacino finds out his wife aborted a baby boy and he beats the shit out of her.

come on man there's still plenty of casual racism and domestic violence depicted on screen. it was a few years back now back but Tony Soprano's crew was racist as fuck and they showed made guys beating/murdering their significant others more than once, and it's still widely regarded as the greatest television show of all time.

Things done for artistic value often get a lot more room to explore. Art isn't without its own controversy though. Just look at the works of Robert Maplethorpe and how mad people were when he got government funding for his art. It seems like in this thread we are confusing poor casting choices with things that happen inside the story. They are different, granted people will get angry about anything for any reason these days. Also a random person doing it for their costume is in poor taste when it really wouldn't hurt the costume to not darken your skin. People would still "get" the costume.

It's a gray area. On the other extreme end of the spectrum, no one wants Elizabeth Warren playing Pocahontas even if she can prove its part of her heritage.
