White guy: Why not? I'm not trying to be offensive. I actually love and respect Dr. King. He's my hero!
Person of Color: Sure, that's cool and I respect and appreciate that. However, white folks painting their faces black, ie blackface, has been used for generations as a way to mock, ridicule, and dehumanize my people and my culture and I find it extremely distasteful.
White guy: Wow. That is totally understandable. Thank you for letting me know.
But, of course, there's always the significantly less reasonable followup that tends to happen any time black folks get a win in the news. Eg:
White guy: Hey, person of color. Can you not dress up as this canonically white fictional character for Halloween?
Person of Color: Why not? I'm not trying to be offensive. I actually love and respect Doc Brown. He's my hero!
White guy: Yeah, well blacks got to shut down some costume choices so it's only fair that whites get to shut some down too. If you don't agree you're racist.
