Our field is so depressingly void of people who are both good at policy and inspiring.
I will settle for someone who is inspiring and willing to listen, like Obama.

Ivy League schools are really efficient networking events. They do not necessarily offer superior education, but they do offer superior connections.
Our system is not a meritocracy, so they are definitely worth the price of admission but also worthy of derision.
I’m gonna hit up España and lay claim to my royal birthright. Got a good chance of being at least 1/1024th.

Scalia described the elite law schools this way. "You can't make a sow's ear out of a silk purse."
Elite schools at any level - undergrad, law, PhD, etc. - may not teach you any better but talent is an innate floor. So their ability to be exclusive at the recruiting level means they start with the best of the best and that's literally all that matters.
EDIT: And I say "talent" fully recognizing that different social circumstances affect one's test scores, GPA, etc. But the systemic advantages that allow rich kids to overachieve in HS will similarly be present in college and beyond and continue to serve them well, which in turn makes them solid bets for admission to these schools. Finding the "diamond in the rough" poor minority kids is a harder task. Ironically because of their obscene endowments, the elite schools do lead the way in trying to scout these students.
Sorry, I was commenting on the educational opportunities provided by the institutions rather than the quality of the average student.
The difference between the average state school honors college student and the average Harvard student is probably a few GPA decimals, a hundred points on the SAT, and a few million dollars of family wealth. Of the three, I know which one is most predictive of future success.
A few million dollars of family wealth is no longer the majority case. 20% of their students are from households making 65k or less a year. The median is 160k or something. That's high but not stupidly high. It's much better than most Ivy Leagues these days, esp Brown.
No one saves money anymore these days anyway.
Your point is correct though.
Wealth isn't income and mean isn't median, but point taken.
Did we do Wisconsin teen nazis in here yet?
