The song sounds like a satire contrasting the easy listening of the music to the content of the lyrics. It's like saying Sympathy for the Devil is making light of war crimes.

If you think it fails in that regard that's fine, but comparing it to Baby it's Cold Outside is asinine.

There is plenty of violent and unsettling music out there created for various reasons, but that kind of music is not played every 35 minutes in the radio during Christmas time and treated as wholesome and full of good cheer.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

And Baby it's Cold Outside was about women empowerment at the time. See how easy it is to defend a song?

How many people do you think seriously enjoy Pumped Up Kicks for the satire? Ten bucks said you got that from google vs. coming up with it for your first time listening to it.

[edit]Every time people bring up the xmas factor I seriously have to wonder if this is more about people just in general being sick of hearing xmas music all the time and want some vengeance on it, than actually thinking it promotes rape culture.

idk, Baby It's Cold outside strikes me more as a song about not wanting to be called a slut than about forceful coercion

If you want to ring up Star 102 Cleveland and tell them you don't think they should play Pumped Up Kicks you are free to do so.

Then I'm not sure what the point was of bringing it up as a point of comparison.

People tend to forget that at the end of the song both parties agree, it is indeed Cold Outside.

The point was it is a song that also has a shitty topic that people listen to and enjoy, and I think that should apply to Baby it's Cold Outside as well. Extending further, considering the popularity of said song, I imagine those that enjoy it are hypocritical for saying it's totally fine to play one and not the other.

This is the key point here. Despite how it is being interpreted in modern times, it's more on the side of empowerment historically speaking.

The whole point is that the girl wants to stay and she's defying the social norms of the period which constrained and shamed women for staying over at a man's place. "What's in this drink?" was a way to blame alcohol for "mistakes."

In "Baby It's Cold Outside" the singer is giving her excuses to stay which is what she already wants to do. Compare it to Blurred Lines, the rapey song of this decade, Thicke is saying "I know you want it" which is a much more direct trivialization of consent.

Now of course Thicke says that wasn't the intent of that lyric, but in an age of affirmative concept that phrase is inherently problematic.
