And yet, that's why comedy like this can be important. I'm not going to go so far as to attribute any particular altruistic or artistic motivation to Kevin Hart as I don't know much of anything about him as a person. But the fact is that ideas and perceptions are not changed if people don't talk about them, and often the easiest way to engage people with sensitive or controversial topics is through comedy.

I don't like the idea that we should just dismiss things people say on comedy sketches or memes because "it's just a joke." That's lazy and dumb. However, in effect I'd still give a free pass to the vast majority of things people say in comedy sketches or memes because they serve an important role in shifting cultural norms.

Whether intentional or not on the part of Kevin Hart, joking about dads beating their kids for being gay on twitter/tv will probably result in fewer dads actually beating their kids for being gay.

I get what you're saying but it doesn't always work out that way. See: minstrel shows. As the old adage goes, you don't punch down in comedy. It's the intent and the reception that matters, and I don't think Kevin Hart's intent was to shed a light on gay rights issues, nor was it likely received that way by most of his audience. This as opposed to, say, a prominent gay celebrity joking about hitting his kid for wearing a pink scarf.


Of course, we'll never know - maybe you're right and that joke made the world a better place. I disagree, but I respect your opinion and give you props for sharing it in a well thought-out manner.

I'm baffled how you could think for a moment I mixed you up with someone when you're basically hitting every point of Head-in-sand, bad humor argument I mentioned before. I've relented two points. One being I didn't clarify a smaller part of my argument enough to cover my ass, and that nobody could argue individual bigotries still and will always exist. LGBT teens still face the highest suicide rate of any demographic worldwide.

Sure, it's -better- than it has been. They're widely accepted in social circles. They have greater if not equal representation in most forms of media. It's frowned upon to joke about someone being gay in a derogatory way. But it's not great, and it's not even "pretty good." It's just "better."

Agreed, we still have a ways to go. Though I'd still argue in most places around America its "Pretty good", especially in Liberal heavy cities and states where progressive policies are more often than not accelerated.

Its ok for kids to beat up other kids for any reason, as long as that reason is not based on their skin color or sexual orientation...even though a 9 year old probably has no idea what their sexual orientation is. Hell, a teenager likely hasnt fully grasped their sexual orientation.

I wouldn't say Side-Eyeing you so much as just the entire Youtube section, Its nothing personal nor is it like I'm stalking you personally. I can tell you I don't have very inspiring opinions* on many of the posters here but I don't let it affect how I interact with them outside of Poop-Deck.

Your posts are simply easy to remember than the longer winded posters cause they usually all follow the pattern of either a short response or humor. You also double post a lot. This isn't a bad thing btw I'm not describing your style as bad. Just easier to remember. Plus your Avatar, I remember a lot of people by Avatar.
