but as with most jokes there is a bit of truth, as with alcoholism and mental disorders and being able to dunk there are genetic predispositions. given the complicated relationship between genotype and phenotype pointing to anything as a the "the gene" is problematic*, and regardless a simple logical exercise (American obesity rates have nearly tripled since 1990 so unless there's some Godzilla business going on it isn't genetics) shows the majority of obesity is caused by environment and behavior. biology is not destiny (except in the rare cases it is), but i think Gred was just making the point for some people keeping the weight off is a lot easier than for others.

*single-gene determinants are called Mendelian traits and can govern simple things like blood type, and whether or not one develops cystic fibrosis. but all more complicated phenotypes like height, weight, intelligence etc are polygenic traits meaning their expression is influenced by multiple genes acting in concert. that is to say there is no 'fat gene', there are dozens of genes which can influence fatness.
Once you've been fat, it's harder to stay skinny. I was fat. Am currently skinny. That being said, it's not THAT much effort. Pay attention to what you put in your mouth and don't sit around like a fucking cunt all day.

Very obviously the latter, which nobody present is attempting to dispute

I'm not keen on forcing people into paying more just because they're bigger as that'll probably translate to people wanting to rail me for my broad shoulders even though there's no gut spilling over armrests or anything. One of the big reasons I try to have at least one empty seat beside me when going to the movies so I can lean more toward it and not constantly be elbowing a neighbor. Pretty much aisle seat for me on buses/planes, too.

I will say i get a little heated on this topic. Once you have been the fat person, you tend to really hate what you used to be and by association the people that still are. It doesn't help when those people regurgitate all the excuses you used to tell yourself, so i'm a little bias on the subject.

i shall take your word for it my fine furry friend, i am one of those blessed who can eat like absolute trash and sit around gaming for a couple weeks and never gain more than a few pounds.

but i think we're mostly in concurrence, genes influence fatness, for a few people it even determines it, but the majority of obesity in this country is the result of lifestyle, an increasingly sedentary existence combined with increasingly unhealthy diets.

Am fat, not to the point I have to buy an extra seat on a plane thank goodness, but buying larger clothes is definitely more expensive. I understand why. More materials needed = higher cost. It’s just annoying but I’m not triggered by it lol

Nope. As you've already mentioned and AG goes a little more into it's different. Predisposition to something you have control over isn't destiny. I'd hesitate to call it a penalty regardless more passing on costs similar to how a bigger seat costs more but if we were to call it that it's more a penalty on behavior or really the results of said behaviour. The same way we treat all the people who turn to various addictions who may or may not have any of the number of predispositions to it. Or the people who display anti social behavior who are predisposed to such. Now to the cancer comparison in a void no but if say the person is oh idk also a regular user of tanning beds then yes. And lets face it the more we learn the more we find out how more and more of what makes us us is influenced by genetics to the surprise of no one. Yes everyone is going to have a harder/easier time at some things then others but it's still fair to within reason treat them the same

It's true for most that fall into that. I actually was pretty similar most my life. Ate however and whatever I wanted... probably helped that I wasn't a fan of eating breakfast and often times not lunch so basically was intermittent fasting before I had a clue that was a thing lol but I'd still pack away insane calories sometimes while being full on make love not Warcraft sedentary and still be underweight. Actually got barred from a buffet when I was 5 which meant I was free but ate more than most adults. The only time I'd gain is if I started working out a lot and then I'd put on the lbs since I already had a huge calorie surplus to fuel the muscle growth.

But several years ago several factors came together to finally make me pay for my bad habits while also making it hard to really switch at the time (like working 14-18 hour days, 7 days a week for a month and only thing you realistically have to eat at was McDonalds. To this day I throw up on anything but their sausage biscuit and fries). And then because hey my body always bounced back even after temporary gains and well had built a lifetimes of bad habits by then I just slipped further and further even when I could easily have helped it. Now a couple years after finally getting back to my highschool weight my body still has a lot less flexibility in calories. Like right now even with a decent amount of exercise I need to eat less than 1700 a day to slowly lose weight but 2k a day I will gain.

tbh I eat Dominos, McDonald's, Burger King, Hardees, etc. once a day because fast food fucking rules and makes reaching 3k calories a day EZ.

I'm almost at the two-year mark of a six days a week lifting program so you can say I'm somewhat active. I love eating which is why I was obese throughout my entire childhood and had severe self-confidence issues which made my transition to hitting a gym that much more of a struggle. I didn't go to a gym for the first eight months as a result, and while I lost weight due to strict calorie tracking, I looked like your stereotypical skinny fat nerd after losing my first 30lbs. That was a little over four years ago, and now I feel bad when I miss a day. Is it an addiction? Maybe, but it also enables me to eat an insane amount of food through most of the year minus summer cut seasons, so it's an addiction I'm entirely OK with.

It also helps if you have an enviroment that proactively helps you out. When we went to decom they shut down the galley/berthings so duty days you were either packing an icechest worth of foods for the entire day, risking going home while on duty, or ordering food in.

Not to mention the closest gym were no longer on the ship but through a few blocks of Newport News which ain't exactly the safest place.

Being 30 lbs overweight is a choice the same as being obese. It's a choice of a lifestyle (a specific diet vs exercise ratio under the conditions of your individual metabolism).

Obesity is just the result of several extreme choices.

My point is that in the end that's not a choice I think we need to take it upon ourselves to judge others for the same way that we would judge people for say, stupidity.

I'd much rather associate with someone whose poor life decisions were eating too many burgers than someone whose poor life decision was sticking it in crayfish.

This is what I was thinking of

"Metabolism appears to act like a spring, Hall said: the more effort you exert to lose weight, the more it stretches out, and the harder it will spring back, regaining and holding onto the fat that was lost."

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

I am a fattie (50lbs. overweight) that sides with Gred.

I know I am solely responsible for the weight I gained, and the lack of losing it.

I know I am making the decision to not lose the weight. I don't blame anyone but myself.

With that being said, this decision came from the major stress I get through the day:

6:00 wake up, shower, get kids ready for school
    7:00 head to work
7:30-3:00-Work. I don't sit down all day (usually not even during lunch). I don't even get to pee until about 2:00 pm. Get little to no breaks.
3:00-4:30-Finally sit down and try to grade as much as I can before leaving.
4:30-5:30 pick up kids from school
    5:30-6:30-cook/eat dinner
6:30-7:00-break or work on hw with the kids
    7:00-7:30-get kids ready for bed
    7:30-10:30-finally done with the day.

Now, yes, from 7:30-10:30 I could work out. I could work out on the weekends. This is my choice where instead I usually log in a game and play. I am not making excuses. Just that by then the idea of working out would put me into severe depression thinking about where I am at, and is that depression worth the weight? Some would say yes, I say no. I am just too mentally and physically tired at that point and don't want to add on extra. And yes my job was my choice and I'd rather be fat and a teacher than skinny and not in the job I love.

[edit] I should say while at this point I figure it's too late for me, I am working hard on raising my kids on healthier eating habits than I do. So hopefully that counts for something.

Man, I haven't had a burger in years. I ate a pound of plain steamed broccoli today. Still fat. Meanwhile my roommate slathers entire jars of mayonnaise and shredded cheese over 5lbs of chicken tenders and calls it "keto". Fucker's down 49lbs.
