I'm of the mind that a rail system could be the answer to rural poverty by allowing commuting into larger cities from rural towns for work to be more practicable.

I say abandon rural life and live an agrarian-urban lifestyle. Some people just like the outdoors, though.

You emerge from the station and the vehicles around are bicycles. They are safe and affordable and plentiful because they are the ONLY vehicles allowed on the road. A fully automated grid system is a boon to safety and congestion (no manual allowed). You can effectively reduce lane widths of existing infrastructure dramatically to allow more bike lanes and a street tram. I'm a HUGE fan of bicycling (I commute 7.5 mi a day one way either by El or bike). The Divvy system has been amazing for Chicago to finish that "last mile" commute for people. It's just as Gryffes edited, you walk out of a major train hub and there are rows of bikes for you to use to get that last mile to your office.
