Chiarelli just signed Mikko Koskinen to a $4.5m extension for 3 years.

That's specifically $4.5m per year for the next 3 years. Not a total of $4.5m over 3 years.

For a goalie that's 30 years old and has played 27 games total in the NHL. For a team that is so fucked salary cap and personnel-wise already and with this signing goes into next season with $73.6m already used up on 16 players.
