Tribal lands fall under federal jurisdiction, the basic effect of the ruling is that the state of Oklahoma can no longer try crimes that occur on tribal territory, and also tribal territory occupies a good portion of the state including Tulsa.

Not quite accurate, the state cannot try crimes by native Americans that were committed within the jurisdiction of a tribe whose reservation has not been expressly disestablished (some, like the Ponca and the Otoe have). Instead, those will he tried in tribal or federal court.
Sorry, I thought that was what I was saying.

Class rank matters a LOT in law. Law school is hard curved; there is no inflation. Every A means there is a correlating C, etc. such that the entire law school has an average GPA of 2.67~3.3 (depending on if their curve is B-, B, or B+). Big firms aren't taking the 60th percentile kid from HYS over the rank #1-20 kid from Columbia, Northwestern, or UChi. So like a HYS graduate at the bottom of their class will probably have more doors open to them than the top law student at a non-ranked school struggling to maintain accreditation, but kids who do really well will always have opportunities.
You can get into a big firm laterally later on in your career, but out of the gate the brand power of your college's name is diluted against your performance. And out of the gate is when students are competing for prestigious clerkships that put them on the path to working with the higher powered judges that are the inside track to becoming a judge themselves one day. Four of the current Justices clerked for a SCOTUS Justice previously.
What the school elitism hurts most are the talented students from lower end socioeconomic backgrounds who might reject an offer from HYS to go to an excellent school for a higher offer of financial aid. Like a couple years ago when UC Irvine launched its law school, it offered its first class complete full rides. The reason they did that is to be able to basically select a class of kids with 4.0 GPAs and 180 LSATs. It worked, and numerically speaking, that inaugural UCI class was competitive with HYS (which helped UCI get ranked in the top 30 law schools despite having absolutely no job placement data to rank them with). There are probably a couple dozen kids from that class who would have graduated summa or magna cum laude from HYS. However in subsequent years UCI's numbers have dropped since they aren't giving full rides to get ridiculously stacked classes, and those kids from UCI's top class will never be considered on the same level as the HYS students.
At 2 a.m. this morning SCOTUS ruled 5-4 that the feds can immediately resume using pentobarbital for lethal injections overturning two lower court rulings, and the feds responded by immediately executing a prisoner in Indiana for the first time in over 15 years.

Why, exactly, was Barr so impatient to put Lee to death? In a statement, he announced that “we owe it to the victims and their families to carry forward the sentence.” Yet the victims’ family members staunchly opposed Lee’s execution. At a minimum, they felt obligated to witness his death if it was to occur, and they filed a lawsuit seeking to delay it so they could attend in person—which the Justice Department successfully defeated. The lead prosecutor who tried Lee, as well as the judge who sentenced him, also oppose his execution. They find it arbitrary and unjust that Lee received a capital sentence for killing a family of three when the “ringleader” of this gruesome plan, Chevie Kehoe, received life in prison.
Not cruel and unusual at all amirite. An executioner killed Lee with an overdose of pentobarbital sodium at 4 a.m., in the first federal execution since 2003. According to his attorney, Ruth Friedman, Lee remained strapped to a gurney for four hours while the Department of Justice sought the green light from the Supreme Court. The government then executed him without first notifying Friedman that her client would be killed.
RBG is at Johns Hopkins for an infection.
Fuck you 2020, that's just over the line.
If Biden actually wins I really hope she retires on inauguration day. I'm still bitter that she didnt retire during the Obama years so her health has been a constant concern through this shitshow of a presidency.

SCOTUS basically allows Florida to keep disenfranchising ex-felons by forcing them to pay all fees and fines they've accrued yet is also unable to tell the ex-felons how much they actually owe. This part of the dissent written by Sotomayor highlights some bullshit that will probably end up happening:Sotomayor pointed out that, due to Hinkle’s rulings, Florida’s “voter paywall” has been on hold for nearly a year. During that period, “tens of thousands of Floridians with felony convictions have already registered to vote.” After all, the courts had said they could. Now these individuals “will have no notice of their potential ineligibility or the resulting criminal prosecution they may face for failing to follow the abrupt change in law.”
