Like ya'll think the Dem establishment just does things because it's shitty. No, the Dem establishment does things based on optimizing the chance to win. Being tough on crime rather than advocating for justice/equality is what worked in the 90s so they did it. Now people becoming a little more woke and it's okay to openly talk about police corruption. But in the 90s, being anti-cop was a death sentence for electoral victory even in the most liberal state.

The DNC didn't want Bernie to win because they know socialist is still a dirty word with enough of the people who actually vote that it is a losing proposition no matter how many rallies Bernie puts together of people that never show up at the polls.

Electoral College is dumb as fuck and if the Dems manage to take all 3 branches of government, should try to get rid of it ASAP... If they even can and it isn't something determined by the individual states

the EC is baked into the constitution as such getting rid of it requires 2/3rds majorities in both chambers of Congress and approval of 75% of states, or 38/50. that route is likely a pipe dream given the electoral advantage it gives Republicans.

but there has been a push of late for states to mandate that their EC votes will go to whomever wins the national popular vote. so far states comprising 36.6% of electoral votes have signed the compact and legislation is pending in states with 11.9% of the votes. if that all passes you're at 48.5% and then a hop skip and a jump away from 50.1% which would then in effect make the winner of the popular vote the winner of the EC regardless of the busted ass system.

No Bush Sr. crushed Dukakis. Dukakis was leading by 9 points at the start of summer, then Bush Sr. pulled out the Willie Horton ad that made all the white people in the suburbs scared about the liberals letting all these black felons go from prison that would come and murder them.

This is what made the Dems pivot hard to the right in the 90s and become tough on crime.

as always it's a little more complicated than 'Repubs were racist and America likes racism'. Dukakis was a terrible, inexperienced campaigner who committed some of the most famous gaffes in political history, his take your son to work day riding on a tank, getting blown up with the "Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy." line, et cetera. the US was also in the grip of a severe violent crime wave, all time high murder rates double what they are now, and the soft on crime line resonated for many regardless of the racial connotations (which obviously still existed and resonated with the shall we say more retrograde elements of society).

regardless the firing of Donna Brazile for the business about Bush affairs, the question on Kitty Dukakis getting raped and murdered during the debate, his flu performance. it was a very poorly conducted campaign and as there were numerous news cycles dominated by his fuck ups leading to sustained Bush polling improvement it's difficult to fixate on the one as the pivot point.

it should also be noted how well Bush performed in less conservative states. he took California, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, DC, only lost New York by 4%. some of those states have changed greatly demographically naturally but he had a broad appeal that is lost to modern Republicans and Dukakis performed exceptionally poorly in the Northeast from which he hailed.
