Yup, we all knew it was coming. Time to take that step back in time.

15 weeks is post-viability right? Generally pregnancies are considered viable at 12ish weeks right? If so, it doesn't really affect Roe...

What, no, the record premature babies to survive are like 21 weeks and that's super rare.

Sorry, I think I was thinking of "viable pregnancy" not "viable baby"

The percentage of infants born at 22 to 24 weeks' gestation who survived climbed from 30% around 2000 to 36% around 2011 across the United States.

You get to a whopping 50/50 survival at like 26 weeks. My kids were all 36-37 weeks and 2 of the 3 still had to go to the NICU after birth.

Yeah after the first trimester most fetuses that have a non-viable deformity or genetic condition will have miscarried.

All pregnancies are viable after conception, and some spontaneously abort at 39-40 weeks just before birth.

Whether the baby is viable or not is usually determined between 12-20 weeks. The age of viability is about 24 weeks. Typical confirmation tests at 20 weeks take 2-3 weeks to come back.

Most laws target this period of time, meaning that all pregnancies not detected before 6 weeks, which is incredibly hard to do, and all pregnancies after 22 weeks, which is incredibly narrow in action window, would be considered viable and abortive if ended.

Once conception has taken place, the pregnancy is viable until it isn't.

It's alive until it isn't, sure.

    That doesn't make it viable.

Umm, it's viable until the moment it's determined it's not. Sometimes it's immediate, sometimes it's at 20 weeks, sometimes at 38 weeks. Viability is akin to known probabilities, not a magic yes or no.

This isn't schrodinger's cat - the viability status exists independent of being measured.

    I think this sounds wrong.

A fetus has the potential for viability upon conception but until it reaches a point in development where it could survive outside the womb, whether with or without intervention, it's not "viable." No 15-week fetus is going to become a baby if it's taken out of the womb.

Viability of pregnancy is different than fetal viability. I'm talking about two different things.

Viability of pregnancy (is there a chance of a live birth) and a viable fetus (could this fetus survive if born right now) are two different things, but some conceptions have a 0% chance of being born alive and therefore are not and never were part of a viable pregnancy.

And, of course, doctors disagree with whether "pregnancy" begins at conception (fertilization) or implantation - but a pregnancy can be non-viable from either starting point.

All I know is the my wife's OGBYN wouldn't see her until after the 1st trimester because she doesn't consider it viable until it makes it to that stage, sorry I opened this can of worms
