But what else are you even using the points for? I literally do not give a fuck and only use them to keep myself over 1.0, and I haven't had to use points to achieve that in years.

Only download files that aren't compressed and broken into 60 files, and you can seed them forever. I'm seeding 250+ files across a few different trackers. Jackett, sonarr, and radarr handle it all for me.

My laptop has a tiny hard drive, I'm constantly cycling stuff (mostly tv episodes) on and off. I don't usually leave it on to seed so I often delete stuff I haven't seeded 1:1 or for 3 weeks, so I have to use points to avoid H&Rs.

I built the server for under $500, and that includes the HDDs, server hardware, and the unRAID software. You can get cheap used 4TB enterprise drives. My server is an old Dell poweredge with a xeon processor. I put 32gb of ram in it, also used. Now the server runs my Home Assistant on a VM, runs several Dockers that handle my media downloads (I tell it to download whatever TV show I want, and it automatically gets every episode at whatever quality I specify after it airs, without me doing anything else), and it does network wide ad blocking, sort of like a pihole. Functions as a NAS with more computing power and hard drive slots than a NAS you'd buy out of the box that costs twice as much.

Cruise over to serverbuilds.net and check out something like a NASkiller 4.0. There's links to sites that sell used enterprise drives too.

Yeah, I'm going to move my plex server off of my unRAID server and onto the shield. The unRAID docker works well enough, but it's older architecture and not really.built to host multiple simultaneous transcodes

Big shout to second hand surveillance drives. That's what I've got while I wait on multi TB SSDs to come down a bit. They're great. Put together an rpi4 media server w/ 2 3TB drives for <100 a couple years ago.

Juniper 1U switch/router combos are great for power consumption & heat, especially if you have a model that can easily utilize aftermarket fans. If you're using older Cisco stuff I'd consider changing as Juniper becomes more affordable for home networks. JunOS has a lot of QoL in comparison to IOS.

74W without PoE on the SRX240(83 w/?) I won't bullshit you, heat will be added where there is a server rack, but it was much worse when I was running Cisco hardware (both AIO sw/routers & separate) w/ Surveillance drives that are constantly on fire.

Mine is a purpose built NAS (QNAP 453D) so it's only running off a Celeron processor, sits in a closed drawer in my TV stand np

I've never in my life gotten so much as a warning from an ISP and I've been illegally downloading and streaming stuff while never once using a VPN for literally 24 years now

Got these installed today. I had 40 and 50 gallon tanks, electric, averaging around 30 kwh per day between the 2. Cost about $90 a month to run. Looking at the energy use thus far on these, 2 50gallon tanks, they'll use around 7 kwh...total. About $21 per month.

I also got it integrated into home assistant for monitoring how much hot water is available and switch to electric during high usage times if the water level drops below a certain threshold.

For the uneducated, what is special about those? Just more efficient or is it a different technology?

They can run with a heat pump (super efficient) or electric (inefficient). Water heaters are typically about 25% of your energy costs if it's gas or electric. It's savings are equal to about 7 solar panels, but at 1/6th the cost. Many people don't really consider the monthly costs of hot water, but it really is a lot. If you have old, highly inefficient water heaters, new hybrid models are worth their weight in gold and will pay for themselves several times over in their lifespan. They'll use about a quarter of the power of an electric or gas unit. 2 50-gallon units cost me around $2,750, including install. I got mine on sale, but if your power company offers rebates, it's definitely worth getting. They have a 10 year warranty. If I spend 10 years in this house, I'll save in well in excess of double my initial costs.

My home is also heated and cooled with two heat pump central units with an electric furnace as backup for incredibly cold days where the heat pump cannot function effectively.

It's still a gas water heater, yes (edit, I can't read)? The on-demand and recirculating heaters are pretty nice and sustainable, but often don't have the same capacity as traditional gas-heaters.

Also depending on how your electric grid is supplied can vary how "green" your electric heaters are. Places like W. Virginia are better suited for natural gas than coal-powered electric heaters.

There's no gas ran to it. I don't have any natural gas ran to my home. You can run gas as opposed to electric as a backup (hence hybrid), but they're heat pump. They work by sucking in hot warm air and pumping out cold air to warm the water. For home heating and cooling, same principle but can work both ways to heat or cool the house.

Thought I posted it here but guess not, replaced my ancient window AC unit and even older gas wall heater in my granny flat with a minisplit heat pump system. (exterior photo taken before house painting)

Works really well and is really quiet.
