BG Homeowner and DIY Thread - Out of the Basement Edition

Yah it was sledgehammer meet tile. Plumbers just left, new rough in valve and faucet installed so everything is back to working. Now I just gotta get the ceiling in the living room and the side of the bath I sledgehammered out fixed up.

see this is why I hate some home builders, they'll install jetted/soaker tubs with roman tub fillers and possibly pumps attached to them and think to themselves "Ahh, they'll never need to access these for maintenance or repair, let's put some fucking expensive tiling over it they'll have to either very carefully remove so they can be put back later, or smash the shit out of it and have to possibly tile match new tiles for replacement."

every single en-suite soaker tub I've ever installed has had nice access panels added for access, usually they're on the long side of the tub surround so it covers both the RTF and the pump if it has it.

Edit- and while I realize they also have to replace the ceiling on the floor below, it didn't look textured to me so it's literally drywall, mud/tape and paint, so it's LITERALLY a fraction of the cost of replacing tiles on that tub surround. I would strongly suggest if you're replacing those tiles to do it in such a way it leaves you an access in the future.

Anyone own a Prius? GF has one and it's spitting out error codes due to 1 of it's modules being at like 5-10% and causing the car to panic and go into limp mode

Garage quoted us $2600 to replace the battery...but you can buy a module for the battery online for $40. Just gotta replace 2 of them total in the whole pack and seems like way more cost effective, granted I need to break out the tools but youtube vids show it's not too bad to do. Anyone done anything like that?

We have horrible mosquitos. It has been dry for three weeks and they are still thick.

The previous owners of our house were big on bad DIY projects. I was crawling around under the deck today and I may have figured something out. They used to have a concrete patio, but decided they wanted a cantilevered kitchen, so they busted a hole in the patio to install a footer and also seem to have sunk a 6x6 in there for some reason. That hole is still damp somehow. There is also a cavity under the old patio exposed by the hole, which I assume is where the mosquitos are coming from.

Questions:
1. Does anyone know why they would have a single pressure treated 6x6 going diagonally towards the footer in a hole?
2. I want to fill the hole, but I don't want to compromise the 6x6 with organics, whatever the heck it is doing. Is filling the hole with sand&gravel crazy?

is it a solid 6x6 or could it be hollow and used as a sleeve of sorts for one of your services? maybe Drainage? it not I have no idea why it would be at an angle like that.

It is a solid, pressure treated 6x6 and our utilities enter the house from the opposite side. I don't know how long but they dug it down below the level of the busted concrete patio. My WAG here is that they used it to lever something into place and either couldn't get it out or didn't get it stable enough that they felt they could remove it. The tag is on the end still (not cut) so maybe it was intentional.

Any feelings about the fill?

I can’t think of any reason why filling the hole would cause issues since it’s a pressure treated 6x6 that doesn’t seem to be load bearing. To be clear though I’m not familiar with house construction in the states so I don’t know if there’s some weird requirement for it to be there and accessible.

Was at my rental house sanding a 2nd story windowsill to prep for recaulking and painting, and my telescoping ladder fucking snapped on me. Fell about 8 feet onto the driveway, smashed my knee on the ground, tore my jeans and got a scrape/bone bruise. Could've been worse but goddammit.

Well, you were using it correctly. I prefer the heavy AF alternative one that is doubtlessly at your Home Depot/Lowes. Folds in half, both sides expand, not telescoping.

Yeah telescoping is convenient but I'm scared AF of that happening. I 2nd the type Bryth suggested; it's heavy heavy but that doesn't happen to it unless you drop an elephant on it.
