I could see the biggest reason for being wary of putting your phone in a pouch is if you have someone watching your kids or something. If that's the case, and given that it is well circulated that Jack White does this at his shows and you are told beforehand, then that's a decision you've consciously made.

Most of these pouches are thick and you have to work at getting through the material and you're not about to rip the pouch open in a panic. I've used them before and it's not a simple just RIP open situation.
