I disagree. I think it was a solid ensemble, on par with Doctor Strange for me. Easily in my top 10. There were some moments where you can tell they had to throw some comedy in but they were unexpected moments and I think they worked for the most part.
A lot of the film subverted expectations, but in the right way if that makes sense.
I think what is happening is those that are used to hi quality wu xia movies may find this just ok in comparison? Those who never watched those types of movies are in for a treat.
I saw someone say, and I agree, that this has the exact same act structure, and therefore strengths and weaknesses, as Black Panther. The only caveat I would make is that the final fight was way cooler.

It's an MCU movie, were there really people who thought it was going to flop..?
Seemingly normal person goes through adversity after tough life only to discover they are extraordinarily rich/smart/powerful or suffer an accident that accomplishes this and goes on to beat someone or an army of someones then just when all hope seems lost an ally you never expected to help turns the tide the hero wins.
Literally every Marvel movie ever, but let's focus on "guy returns home".
Ehhhh. Black Panther was in Wakanda 90% of the time anyway. He lived there full time and only traveled for work shit. Shang Chi has literally never been to this place in his life.
Black Panther would be closer to Thor than shang chi. Even down to the villain being a relative who has usurped the throne.
Shang Chi is a lot more like Guardians 2 than Black Panther.
Don't believe me?
Angry father figure searches for his son after his quest for domination is interrupted. He then searches for his son relentlessly, manipulating everyone into his misguided plan. He's affected by the death of his loved one but determined to see his plan through to fruition.
Son returns to an ancient land to learn about his roots and come to terms with his choices and past along with his new family, discovering what it means to be a hero with power his father shares with him.
They confront each other in a final fight, each using ancient power that culminates in the death of a father figure who sacrifices himself to save his son and give him a fighting chance. A swarm of bad guys tries to kill everyone but is easily defeated by the power of teamwork.
At the end, the son realizes his life is forever changed but he's determined to continue on with his love interest at his side.
A sister who is questionably good also appears to change sides at some point after realizing there is a common enemy and helps the group succeed in their mission, leaving them after the climactic final battle to pursue her own interests.
After the battle and climax, a touching funeral ceremony is held for the fallen.
OH MY GOD SAME MOVIE
Where the movie starts is irrelevant to their origin.
Is there another Marvel origin movie that ends with a giant battle sequence besides Black Panther? I guess maybe Guardians 1 but that's more many tiny ships vs. 1 large ship. The first Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Ant-Man, Captain Marvel, and Black Widow all do without massive army vs army battle sequences for their conclusions. Shang-Chi and Black Panther are the exceptions.

Still doesn't fit your criteria because T'Challa hardly went through a "tough life" and neither he nor Shang-Chi "discovered" they were powerful through accident or happenstance, they both trained specifically for the role they were in. The most major difference is Shang tried to leave because T'Chaka was pretty cool but Wenwu was a dick.

This movie was the usual marvel origin story schtick, with all the successes and tropes that brings. It's not a bad movie, but it is absolutely "one of those", and if you're in the mood for one of those that's great, but it brings nothing new or even particularly exciting to the formula. It's just a competent origin story which we'll never bring up again once shang chi has a better sequel/teamup to discuss.
It's no Thor 1, but it ain't Iron Man either.

You outlining differences been the two defeats your argument. Agree to disagree.
I see we're at the 'fucking nerds' arc of a Marvel release.
Since my argument was "they have near identical act and story beat structure and therefore near identical strengths and weaknesses" and you took that to "are you saying they're the same movie?!" I'm gonna go ahead and discount your opinion here.
