alright i watched some more clips and holy cow the dialogue seems bad bad. idk if it's out of context or what but this has been a morning of whiplash, BACK TO WAIT AND SEE

That's what I took away from Skillups review. We're all into RPGs, calling anything about it dated is pot calling kettle black in a lot of cases. Metaphor is over in the other thread with rave reviews and just about any Atlus/Anime trope you can think of is in it, but we're all lapping it up. Skillup's review though, those dialogue examples felt super dead faced and uninteresting.

I also kind of wonder, with the dialogue, where he picked those examples from in terms of game progress and how consistent he was with picking the same attitude options. Hawke's dialogue changed as the game progressed depending on how friendly or unfriendly you were being throughout the game and I wonder if a similar system is at play here.

Frostbite baby. was playing through Inquisition in the build up to this and still looks p damn good 10 years later. technically Veilguard is a wonder just wish the art style wasn't god fuckin awful.

WOO! Perfect timing. Thanks! Didn't know Infinite Wealth was on sale. Def buying this. Just finished LaD before Metaphor. Dragon Age is going the seven seas route.

Ok so playing for a bit and the game has a very weird oddity I really really hope they fix.

If you're using a controller scrolling through the menu inputs register on button release, not press. So it makes everything with a controller feel slightly laggy. Not sure who thought something like that was a good idea cause it feels bad.

Thoughts after going for like 4 hours so far

Even in the early stages combat is pretty good. It's very much fantasy/melee focused Mass Effect and not really in line with the previous games.

Faces do look kinda weird, but otherwise the presentation is fucking spectacular. I'm playing on a 4090 laptop (which halfway between a desktop 4070/4080) and performance is very consistent 120 fps (using frame gen) at 1440p with mostly the Ultra preset.

I know there was some thoughts that the cartoony dragons would lend to the game not being as dark as previous entries, but after finishing the second story mission can definitely say that's not the case. Story is getting very dark very fast.

Also like it really can't be stated enough how fucking good the hair looks in this game. It's goddamn amazing

Yeah the game just fucking looks great and the hair is mindblowing. It also seems pretty well optimized, I have a 4090 but I'm still getting like 90 fps average at UW 1440p with everything absolutely maxed out with just DLAA. The only problem I'm having right now is the game fucking crashes to desktop every half an hour without any feedback, it just freezes for a second and is gone.

any early feedback on the game that doesn't involve pretty looking hair? I've been on the fence on this for awhile cause tbh the trailers didn't really sell me on it, and the few clips I've seen the dialogue seemed pretty rough.

I'm 3 hours in and it feels very Dragon Age to me. It's not Origins, so if you want that, steer clear.

You can cherry pick rough dialogue moments out of every large RPG. Veilguard isn't going to win any writing awards but it's no better or worse than previous entries IMO.

Edit: Also runs great on my 4070 TI Super at 1440p, haven't experienced any crashes though so I can't help there.

Yeah I don't have any major issues with the dialogue I've come across so far.

Even early on the game already does a good job of reflecting the choices you've made along the way. It's maybe slightly immersion breaking but it will have little pop ups on the side of the screen letting you know how a previous choice affected your current interaction.

The vibes are pure Dragon Age, and so far I'm really feeling the choice to basically turn the combat into a fantasy version of the Mass Effect 3 system.
