I always loved astronomy growing up. Too bad I suck at math. Takes me forever to set up my orion telescope to look at anything significant.

Don't sell yourself short. A lot of people that teach math are mediocre at teaching it and most of us are of average intelligence. The combination makes complex mathematics seem daunting for the average person. If you have a phenomenal math teacher though, the shit becomes easy as piss and shockingly, fun.

Most of my maths classes past algebra 2 in HS were a game of memorizing formulas and memorizing how to solve shit. Teachers tend to avoid teaching why a formula works or why you solve it that way, they just tell you it's what you use to solve something, which means fuck all. Then again maybe highschool kids don't actually care about why formulas work.

Beyond a point, math stops being intuitive for EVERYONE and progress is due solely to a thorough application of time and effort

It’s not really possible to be bad at advanced mathematics, it’s just possible to be too lazy/busy to succeed

There is something to be said about how you are taught algebra and functions and trig and calc and shit

You NEED the fundamentals. When I went back to school I legit needed to relearn how fractions and exponents and shit worked. It was amazingly embarrassing, but it needed to be done.

90% of the mathematics I do is automatically done by software now, I remember how to do shit that would be stupid to implement by hand when you're working with terrabytes of arrays. But knowing why telling the computer to do x and what that does to the data is 1000% more important than learning how to add a 2x2 matrix by hand.

Oh I agree that fundamentals are super fucking important, you can't build a house without a foundation. Anyone can intuit how matrices work but man 99.9999% of us doing fancy mathematics ain't anywhere near Einstein.

What you said above is categorically incorrect

Not knowing what your code is doing is a recipe for making lasting and pervasive mistakes. It prevents you from properly testing and debugging.

I see this shit too often. It’s gotta be super embarrassing to have to recant the results of your widely cited paper after 10 years because you integrated wrong.

Comparing analytic results to numerical is like the crux of testing your results rigorously

Like you dont need to do it on petabytes but that shit better work for 1000 random sets of MB size data

That's gotta suck ass. I was speaking from a position of never having to do almost anything by hand. I firmly believe that (in my situation) knowing how to do it with software and why you do it is more important than being able to do it by hand. It's possible I'm just bitter about the shit I don't actually get to use.
