    Help Zealot Find A Job

    Hi BG,

As some of you have heard, my life situation is changing somewhat drastically in February. With that going on and the government shutdown making me unsure if I'd have a job (I do, all is well and I go back tomorrow but the thoughts it brought up remain) I thought it would be a good time to reach out and try to take advantage of any connections I have here.

I'd like something new, and I've got a momentary window of freedom to really go anywhere to do it. Ideally I'd like to stay in the $75k and up range but it depends on the cost of living of wherever I land. I've worked for DoJ for most of the past 3 years, except for a small window where I left to do some private sector work in Project Management and came right back because the environment was beyond awful (the company's General Counsel will still vouch for me though). Got a law degree, licensed in Maryland, if anyone knows of anything in the general DC Metro area that would be ideal but like I said, for right now I could really go anywhere in the country, and honestly getting away from here for awhile after February could be a good thing.

Anyway, I'm bringing all the resources I have to bear in this and I figured BG could be another one. Merry Christmas to one and all.

Can't help you since I'm in Texas. Some of my lawyer friends are in immigration law, and they are crazy busy.

Has listings for things like the Smithsonian and other agencies that don't give a crap about shutdowns and don't really operate like the rest of the government and you get to do cool shit. Worth actually giving it a quick look.

Just curious, are you looking to stay in the world of law or whatever it is you do? Or are you looking for anything? I've always wondered what someone would do if they are in mid life, are tired of what they are doing for work even though it's what they went to school for, and have the means to go do anything.

That... is a very good question. I'm not sure, I haven't considered it.

Actually the Smithsonian does sound pretty interesting. I will go through the list and see what pops out for me.

I feel like this should be the top level question here

When I opened my daily Linkedin this morning for job recommendations there was a job I will most surely never get an interview for but I'm going to apply for it. Stryker Medical is hiring for a sales position where it's 50% travel and work from home. While I'm not familiar with the medical field or how surgery works and all of that I did work two years as a sterile processing technician and cleaned numerous Stryker kits. I found it so interesting how some of these kits for surgery had over a hundred instruments and it would be just one of many kits used for a surgery. It was quite eye opening how many different tools are used for surgery and how these instruments and tools give doctors the opportunity to heal people and save lives even.

Why would I think that job would be cool? Well, I do love sales. I love helping people. I love the fact that you will make as much or as little money as you want depending on (for the most part) your work ethic. I think it would be amazing to be the person who helps get these kits to doctors and surgeons to empower them to perform at the highest level.

Maybe there is something that you've never done work wise out there that may be a great fit for you.

A law degree in DC pays 70k a year? Is that a typo? Is there a zero missing?

I have friends who make in the 50s. Yeah there's a huge market for law here but a) that makes it hugely competitive and b) I've never applied to any firms, I've always done government work. Most jobs in this field cap at probably $130k? With maybe one exception all the people I know who went to do big law ended up miserable. Also, 3 years out of law school with almost no litigation experience? I probably couldn't get a firm job now if I wanted one.

That said, law has been pretty much all I've done for the last 7 years and I'm thinking hard about Kalmado's question. I'm not sure what I'd do if I weren't doing some kind of legal work. Investigations can get a little dull but I still enjoy it most of the time. Before this I was a researcher, which also had perks.

Since you know law stuff and have friends (what's that like and how do you get those) that work the field, is a paralegal a shit thankless job where they make peanuts?

Depends on where you're at. I want to say paralegal work at the government level probably has a hard cap of around $85k (or whatever random dollar amount the GS level puts out) but out in big law world, if you're in something doing big business like corporate law or finance or happen to get into something that does a lot of work with the government and needs people to handle all the bureaucracy and filings that involves, you could see people making upwards of $120k for that in DC. Whether or not they're actually appreciated for what they do, I can't say. I would imagine paralegals working for boutique firms, if they even spring for one, or those who are part of a huge firm that just needs bodies to read documents could get as low as maybe $53k and have no one ever know their name or face.

Have you considered working at the state level rather than federal doing exactly what you’re doing now? Maybe move to a new state, change of scenery, get a nice government job away from DC.

I almost went to a school in metro Detroit to get the Paralegal Certificate. I enjoy researching things and reading and I thought being a Paralegal would fulfill my want to do something meaningful in life by way of working in the legal system. Ended up moving and starting school for an Associates in Computer Programming but life got in the way. When my wife is working as a RN, maybe I'll revisit that.

The first requirement of that Stryker job is BA or BS. Go do that! Seriously though, I bet good reps make 6 figs pretty easily. Tell you what, break out the white out and then once it dries ink my name on your fancy degree. I'll shoot you a Franklin once I get my first check.
