It's mostly a temperament issue after a certain minimum level of competence is attained. I don't particularly care how likeable candidates are. However, their personalities are important in the sense that a large portion of their job is foreign policy and negotiation. A president who stamps their feet and throws tantrums when Congress doesn't do what he/she wants it to do isn't going to accomplish much relative to their party's control of Congress. Frankly, I feel like Bernie would have been roughly as ineffective as Trump in this regard.
For a president with solid Republican control of every branch of government, Trump has accomplished very little. The things Congress managed to do they probably would have done without him. In fact, they probably would have been more effective at getting things done with a literal sack of potatoes in the White House. The fact that the government is shut down right now over a presidential veto when the GOP holds both houses of Congress is a testament to how poor his domestic leadership abilities are.
