There is a difference between using fire to fight fire and first striking democracy.

I really have trouble accepting the if only dems hadn't... argument, if no one took the step years ago I find the odds of Rs not doing so now somewhere near 0.

90% of what Trump does lol.

He just says anything and does whatever he wants and sees what stiks. And there's no risk for him because no one holds him accountable.

What ground work are you even talking about? Removing 60 vote confirmation requirements is one step.

Like Gredival has spoken here you have one bill a year you can pass through reconciliation that only requires a simple majority. Though this year starts in october (I believe double check) so it could be possible to have 3 bills passed in the 117th congress and 2 in the 119th assuming democratic control is retained and the blue dog caucus doesn't blow up whatever bill is being attempted to pass.

This would make sense if you thought most of your agenda could pass with 60 votes and had the reconciliation wildcard in your back pocket for the random "well, that lobby was stronger than I thought" piece of legislation.

But none of the things being discussed by presidency-focused Democrats would get 60 votes in the Senate even if 2020 was such a massive blue wave that Democrats took 60 seats in the senate. 100% of the things the Democratic party wants to do will have to be passed with 50 votes (likely after a massive blue wave). It just makes more sense to ditch the filibuster. They probably could just put it back after the policygasm (including making DC a state) and simultaneously raise the votes required to change senate rules to 67.

that may be the most naive imaginable progression, once the filibuster is effaced from the Senate it is not coming back. that is a policy position one can argue to be sure but don't console yourself with the notion Dems will be able to put it right back into place once they use a simple majority to pass everything they want.

Wasnt there an argument made not long ago that nuking the filibuster would be better for progressive causes in the long run? I'd find myself sympathetic towards that idea seeing how the GOP held all 3 houses and still couldn't kill the ACA.

What would stop them? Changing the rules is currently a majority vote. If anything, I would assume that it won't be an option for them because Mitch would have already made the same rule change if he ever had to hand off power to a slim majority of Democrats.

The argument is that Conservatives can perfectly well cut taxes under reconciliation, and since that's most of what they want to do it doesn't hurt them, but many expansions of the social safety net can't be done under reconciliation, so it hurts Dems more.

Conservatives could, however, pass something like a total ban on abortion after viability, or whatever the constitutionally-allowed most restrictive state abortion laws are federally if they got 53+ senate seats.
