I think air travel should be as cheap as feasible. The low airfares have been pushing airlines to use smaller jets with more efficient engines (A350-1000/ULR, A220, B737-900NEO). These engines produce less pollution and are an order of magnitude more efficient than their predecessors.

The other intangible benefits of having more people go to more places and experience more cultures are hard to measure but very important imo.

I'm with cheap as feasible air travel, and just feel that feasibility point is fairly far from present-day operations.

I totally agree there are complex social and cultural benefits to the travel, and our traveling should be decidedly nonzero. Simply, the carbon emissions from this scale of air travel using these aviation fuels in these amounts are.. problematic. I do believe even a single order of magnitude improvement in efficiency is both fantastic and not enough. Don't worry though, you'll probably still fly pretty often.

A redneck of the truck-tachin', meat-eatin', shit-beer drinkin', cigarette-butt-litterin' type (but never flies) would have some weird grounds of.. superior moral relativism in destruction (??) with a vegan affluent basic bitch who flies to Bali thrice a year for Insta pics, who just thinks we just need to recycle more.

A carbon tax that excludes the most common jet fuels is hardly a carbon tax at all, like WA's recent initiative for example.
