My SO's niece is reading Hunger Games in English instead of the 1984/BNW/Fahrenheit-451 core. I said that was fucking stupid. Her father got mad at me (because he's a fan of the books). I said that the books are fine casual reading for a girl her age, but that you can't just plug in Hunger Games as a replacement for hallmark English language dystopian fiction because it has an authoritarian government. In HG it's just the world setting for a story that is mostly character driven. The focus on the love triangle has no terminal thematic payoff the same way it does in 1984 where everything comes back to fear and control. He got offended and said that we can't get caught up with how things were taught like when we were in school and common core math is different too.

To be fair, depending on her age he's not wrong. You can make kids read all these books and teach them about the themes involved, but I guarantee you 99% of them are not ready to give a shit and probably will never. It is important to find books that they can relate to and then explore the themes in those books. Something like The Crucible is super relatable for high school kids coming into teenage drama in full force. Catcher in the rye and heart of darkness, not so much.

I'm watching the Overwatch League cuz it's on ABC. I don't think OW is a very good spectator esport; it's fun to play but it doesn't translate well to spectating.

However I actually appreciate the stale meta aspect of every single match being DVa, Reinhardt, Zarya, Lucio, Brigette, and Zenyatta. Makes the competition more about execution and less about random imbalance.

But I watch OWL, and I can't follow what's going on.

First person perspective is fine when you are playing and you can understand what's going on, but you can't be watching a whole match from one person's perspective. And the game doesn't translate well into watching third person perspective. With the exception is ultimates, you can't tell who is doing what or why bodies are dropping

I only really watch fighting game tourneys for “esports.” I would think it’s easy to follow for those not in the know. I can’t really follow anything else. LoL or whatever DOTA is playing on twitch might as well be gibberish.

i remember books i read from back then, tho junior high--->college is one big book blur, but i don't really remember any of the books we studied in class
