A lot of sports execs are pretty incompetent.

Look how long Ernie Grunfeld held onto his job with the Wizards despite being just awful at it. Or sticking with NFL, what a horrendous job the Cardinals front office was at handling the entire Josh Rosen situation.

at this stage of the game you'd assume gms would know the value of positions. i mean, they seem to understand it from the money stand point. all the various positions surrounding the kicking game are the lowest paid positions in the nfl... by a lot. logically you shouldn't put high draft capital into a position that isn't worth much money even if that player becomes the absolute best at that position.

even if you get the next greg zuerlein, he still isn't going to to be worth an average DE in terms of trade value

Not to downplay the incompetence of those examples, but at least in those cases it is generally a question of philosophy and player valuation. Even if they are dumb, there are still arguments to be made for some of those decisions

How to value kickers has been studied to death by people that don't even work for organizations and it's pretty objectively clear how they should be valued. Not understanding such a basic principle is breathtaking

Even worse considering Licht already made the colossal Aguayo fuck up that was clear the moment he did it and still didn't learn from it

The funny thing about that is the FB average is skewed by the 49ers crazy deal for Juszczyk, which is another example of bizarre (I'd argue stupid) allocation of resources

Juszczyk's deal has (well... had, since we're entering year 3 of his 4 year contract) very little guaranteed money, so it wasn't that outrageous.

He's absolutely the best fullback in the NFL, and at the end of the day 5.5 mil a year isn't that much money in the overall scope of the NFL salary cap.

7m guaranteed is a lot considering other FBs were getting... none? It's as much that it was an overpay compared to what other teams were likely willing to pay

It's not a bonehead move on par with the others we're talking about but every move has an opportunity cost with cap space rolling over each year.

it all depends on how many snaps a guy gets. if your fb is on the field for half the offensive snaps, he can easily make up his value

Quick look of the internets shows he played 63% of offensive snaps in 2018

I'd want more than half for that money. If you're paying him like a RB I'd expect closer to 80%

the only rbs in the entire league that get 80+% of the snaps are lev bell, zeke, cmc, gurley, barkley, and dj

Right... so idk why you'd pay a FB 250% (!!!) of the next highest paid FB in the league unless you're going to have him on the field blocking/catching/carrying for closer to ~80% of snaps

listen. if i had a team i would never have a rb outside of his rookie deal on my team ever. i'd just try to draft a new one every year in the 3rd/4th round and run them into the dirt. but it's still cheaper to pay juszczyk 5 million than pay lamar miller 6.5 for essentially the same shit

like i said before, the better question is why the fuck is sf paying their running backs anything when their fb is doing all the work lol

I'm not trying to lecture you specifically, just sharing my thoughts. I would rather pay neither KJ or Miller those salaries

Juszczyk plays a lot of snaps but he doesn't actually carry the ball much. Off the top of my head I'm not sure if he's made it to double digit carries in a season ever.

He's a good blocker and reciever tho.

If he pans out next season, they may be able to trade him to the Jags for Nick Foles in 2020.
